Abdul Ghaffar, Abdul Ghaffar Mauwi, Abd al-Ghaffar Iraqi (AH 1283-1341 or 1866 - 1923) was an Islamic scholar who worked as a teacher (Sadre-mudarris) in Deobandi madrasas in Mau and Ballia district. He was a prominent student of the great Islamic scholar Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, and his contribution toward classical scholarship of hadith was noted by the Deobandi movement in India. [1] [2]
Early life[edit]
Abdul Ghaffar was born on 2 Safar 1283 AH (8 June 1866) in Aurangabad Mau Uttar Pradesh. His father and grandfather, Abdullah and Turab Ali, belonged to Iraqi Biradari in Mau. He completed early education in Islamic jurisprudence, Tafseer, Hadith, Arabic grammar, and literature in Mau, Mirzapur, and Lucknow (AH 1304 or 1887). In particular, his teachers included Shaikh Jamal al-Din Maui, Maulana Imamuddin Punjabi, Shaykh Abd al-Haqq, and Adeeb Syed Mahdi Hasan and Hakim Baqar Husaien were from Lucknow. He studied the books of Hadith (Kutub al-Sittah) under Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi (1305-1306) receiving a certificate (1307). He obtained authorization (Ijazah) from his teacher Shaykh al-Dalail 'Abd al-Haqq' Ilahabadi Muhajir Makki for transmitting hadith. [3]
Career[edit]
After completing education, he taught students in madrasa inside Shahi Masjid Mau for about a year and at Madrasa in Sirajganj, Pabna Bengal as head-Mudarris for 2-3 years (AH 1308-1311). Around AH 1311, he worked as a Sadre-Mudarris at Madarsa Anwarul Uloom, Nawanagar, Ballia district. In Ballia, Shaikhul Hadith Maulana Mohammad Ayub Azmi of Jamiah Islamiah Talimuddin Dabhel, Gujarat, India spent about one year, and studied early Quran tafsir and Hadith. [1] Later from AH 1322, he taught students in Mau and Anjuman Islamia Gorakhpur. In that period, Maulana Habib al-Rahman al-A'zami , (Habib al-Rahman al-'Azmi: Life and works (Biography)) was his noteworthy student. He obtained permission (Ijazat) to narrate Hadith from his teacher Abdul Ghaffar. [3] In addition his student in Mau in AH 1325 included Allamah, Maulana Muhammad Ibrahim Balyawi [4][5] He wrote short articles based on the Hanafi school of thought in Urdu. [6] Along with this he wrote some books in the Arabic language and a moderate number of fatawa. Some of his work needed compilation. [1]
Death[edit]
Abdul Gaffar died in AH 1341 or AD 1923 in Mau Uttar Pradesh and was buried in a place near Idgah in Mau.
