Maxwell D
Maxwell D is a UK recording artist, producer and business owner. Influential in the early creation of the UK Grime scene, he was born in Dulwich hospital, South London on 6th May 1979. Maxwell D (real name Denzol Cameron) grew to love music through his father, who was a well-known DJ, Natty B on Choice FM (now known as Capital XTRA).
At the age of 17 he entered an MC competition through radio station Kool FM. Maxwell went on to win the competition and was offered a spot on the station.
2000-2001
Maxwell D first entered the UK Garage scene, featuring on Ramsey and Fen’s song titled “Favourite Part of Me” which was released by Sony BMG in 2000. In 2001 he continued to be known on the UK Garage scene when he released his debut single "Serious", entering the UK national charts at number 38[1].
Later in 2001, he joined Wiley, Target, Ace, Slimzee, Plague, Genius and God's Gift, from Rinse FM to form the group "Pay As You Go Cartel”. Their debut single "Champagne Dance" was signed to Sony Music and reached number 13 in the UK national charts.
Maxwell D has collaborated with UK star Ms Dynamite as well as international rapper Ludacris on his number one smash hit "Southern Hospitality" which was released in the UK edition of Ludacris’ "Chicken and Beer" album. After his collaboration with Ludacris, he was signed to EMI. He has continued to collaborate with various UK and international artists such as Dizzee Rascal, More Fire Crew, Adam F, Little Moe, Asher D, Charlie Sloth, Gemma Fox, Rudimental, Tinchy Stryder.
2008 Obama Presidential Campaign
In 2008 Maxwell D and Ruwanga Samath wrote and produced "Make it to the Sun"[2] (by Ruwanga Samath and Maxwell D) for the Barack Obama presidential campaign;
Maxwell D was referenced in the 2016 book This is Grime By Hattie Collins and Olivia Rose[3] and the 2018 Book Grime Kids: The Global Grime Takeover By DJ Target [4] and recently Inner city pressure by Dan Hiscox[5]
2019 - Recent
Maxwell D has been making more music and getting back into the live performance world, being promoted by RedBull[6] as well as performances supporting LVN (see below - Charity).
Charity work
Since 2018 Maxwell D has been working on a campaign to not only payback to his community who have supported his journey but also help those who took a wrong turn. In his own words "i could have been one of them kids easily if i hadn't found my music". He is a founder of Music Through the Bars. An organisation helping the rehabilitation of young and urban offenders through training in and around the music industry with the aim of helping the transition to employment after prison and preventing reoffending.
He actively supports the London Village Network[7] with competitions and live performances.[8]
