The McDonnell Douglas DC-10-50 was a proposed version of the DC-10 wide-body airliner by McDonnell Douglas themselves for British Airways.[1] However, it was never built due to various factors, including market demand and economic considerations, after the project of the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-50 was abandoned, British Airways ordered the Lockheed L-1011-500.[1][2][3]
Design[edit]
The McDonnell Douglas DC-10-50 was designed to have an extended range such as to feature modifications to its fuel capacity and efficiency, allowing it to cover longer distances without refuelling as the engineers had optimized the wing design and aerodynamics in order to achieve better fuel economy.[1]
The passenger capacity was meant to have a completely redesigned interior layout would enhance passenger experience during those extended flights. The seating configuration would have been adjusted to accommodate more passengers or provide additional comfort.[2]
The McDonnell Douglas DC-10-50 was also designed to use with Rolls-Royce RB211-524 jet engines.[1][3]
