Grammatical Features

The Medinipuri variety is influenced by Bengali due to its geographical location in the Southwestern region of West Bengal and the majority in these districts comprising Bengali speakers.

The features of the variety are as follows (Standard Odia followed by Medinipuria):[2]

  • Word Final Vowel Deletion (Schwa deletion)

Eg.- In this Genitive case, ଲୋକର (lokara) - ଲୋକର୍ (lokar)

  • Some phonetic shifts in verb conjugation- 'nt' to 'it' or 'n', 'chh' to 'ch'

Eg.- doing (formal)- କରୁଛନ୍ତି (karuchhanti) - କରୁଚନ୍ (karuchan), he would have done- କରନ୍ତା (karantā) - କରିତା (karitā), he has done- କରିଛି (karichhi) - କରିଚି (karichi)

  • Case variations

Locative- 'ra' instead of 're', outside- ବାହାରର (bāhārra), in the house- ଘରର (gharra)
