Mehmed Zahid Kotku (1897, Bursa – 13 November 1980, Istanbul), was a Turkish Islamic scholar, clergyman, preacher, writer, and Naqshbandi sheikh.

Life[edit]

Kotku completed his primary and secondary education in Bursa. He was called to duty in the army at the age of 18 due to World War I, where served on the Syrian front for many years. His older brother, Ahmet Şakir Efendi, died at the age of 28 after fighting on the Jerusalem and Çanakkale fronts. After returning from military service, he started to attend religious meetings in Istanbul. He became a student of Ömer Ziyaüddin ed-Dağıstanî in the Gümüşhanevi dergahi. He served as imam and khatib (preacher) in various places. Following the shut down of tekkes (dervish lodges), zawiyas and tombs by the early republic government of the time, he returned to Bursa and remained there until 1952.[1]

Iskenderpasha Community[edit]

The guidance mission of Kotku was loved by the people around him and his sermons were followed with interest. He was adopted by the members of the congregation and turned into a community. Thus, the Iskenderpasa Community which took its name from Iskenderpasa Mosque where the sermons began was founded.[1]

Death[edit]

Towards the end of his life in 1979, Kotku moved to Medina and fell ill shortly thereafter. He returned to Istanbul in 1980 and had an operation in February. He went to Mecca for the Hajj pilgrimage and returned on November 6th. Mehmet Zahid Kotku died on 13 November 1980. His funeral was held at Suleymaniye Mosque following Friday congregation prayers and he was buried behind the tomb of Sultan Suleiman.[2]
