Mehtaab Sawhney

Mehtaab Sawhney is an American mathematician and assistant professor at Columbia University. A Clay Research Fellow, several of his results have been recognized as breakthroughs.[citation needed]

Education

Sawhney graduated as the valedictorian of Commack High School in 2016. He then enrolled in a computer science program at the University of Pennsylvania. A year later, he transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he graduated in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a minor in computer science. He also won the Morgan Prize. After completing a one-year master's degree at Cambridge, he returned to MIT to pursue his doctoral studies. His dissertation, titled Probabilistic and Analytic Methods in Combinatorics, was supervised by Yufei Zhao.[1]

Research

Sawhney's research interests are "broadly within combinatorics, probability, analytic number theory, and theoretical computer science".[2] While still in graduate school, in collaboration with James Leng and Ashwin Sah, he demonstrated a major result relating to Szemerédi's theorem.[3] More recently, in collaboration with Ben Green, he proved that infinitely many primes are of the form p2+nq2 for any given n0 or n4(mod6), noting that "the argument could surely be modified in a straightforward manner to handle arbitrary positive definite binary quadratic forms over ".[4][5]

Personal

Sawhney grew up on Long Island,[6] and he is a Sikh.
