Meli Melo Limited

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Meli Melo Limited, formerly Meli Melo Artists Alliance, opened in November 2002 in Central, Hong Kong. Its studios are known by the public as artjamming, and they offer ART JAM sessions, gatherings of people who paint for social relaxation. Individual or groups entertain themselves for pleasure, team building, corporate, or sponsored social events.

"ART JAM" and "artjamming" have been trademarked in Asia since 2007 and in Europe since 2009.

Publications

In 2003, The Art of Artjamming, written and designed by Betty Cheung and Wilson Chik, was published. An extensive account of the movement and a brief about the unusual in Hong Kong. This book is a catalogue of interesting facts and a collage of photographs. The book was reviewed by Mani Rao in the Asian Review of Books[1]

Sponsorships

During 2004–2007, the company ran an annual Hong Kong-wide mural painting contest called Creativity Day. All schools could participate, allowing students to explore and create permanent murals on school premises. Meli Melo continues to sponsor schools, companies, charities, and leagues.

On the road

artJAMaLAMa is a service that caters to ART JAM sessions outside the studios. They provide temporary locations for schools, fairs, shopping centres, and other events.

Acrylic paint

Acrylic paint is the primary art medium used. The paint is flexible, works well with other materials, is easy to clean, and is resistant to water and heat, thus outlasting all other art media.

Using acrylic can be taught, or techniques can be shown or mimicked. However, the creativity used to apply the medium (i.e., textures and colour blending) and composition are intrinsic to the process.

Designed Equipment

The artjamming studios are equipped with pragmatically designed tools. Pivotal (movable) easels allow for the full rotation of the canvas while painting, as well as height adjustments.

The “wet paint box” is a take-away packaging that houses the work of art for transport immediately after painting; the canvas dries inside.
