Mellowood® is a textile fabric developed by Undiemeister®, for use in its own line of underwear products. Mellowood® consists of Modal or Lyocell, combined with (organic) cotton and Elastane. The combination (blend) of these main components (Modal or Lyocell blended with (organic) cotton), creates a fabric which is unique and durable. Sturdy, yet silky soft.

Undiemeister® (Founder Rik Vegter and Co-Founder Jeroen Adriaans) requested a Patent on this unique blend, as Mellowood® delivers silky softness, absorbs moisture quickly and dries quickly, is highly ventilated, is anti-bacterial, hardly pills or shrinks and retains its beautiful color even after washing. As of December 2020, Patent is pending, which is expected to be received by Undiemeister® in April 2021.

History

Both Rik Vegter and Jeroen Adriaans are veterans in the marketing and selling of sustainable man’s underwear. Introducing textiles made from bamboo in 2011, from two different companies (Bamboodaddy and Bamigo), both entrepreneurs made the decision to “set the next step” in sustainable yet luxurious fabrics. While bamboo fabrics offer some of the advantages that Mellowood® has to offer, bamboo’s viscose-production is still very polluting.

Sustainability

The growing popularity of bamboo as a source for textiles unfortunately did not improve the way bamboo fabrics are being made. The main components of Mellowood® are being made in a far more nature friendly way than bamboo-viscose, and Mellowood® strives to be the first fabric which is produced CO2 neutral. To reach this objective, Mellowood® primarily uses Modal or Lyocell made in an environmentally friendly way, as it is done by LENZING™ (under the brand name TENCEL®), a worldwide forerunner in the sustainable production of textiles, and other certified organic producers. The raw materials (beech wood at Modal and eucalyptus wood at Lyocell) come from sustainably managed plantations and forests. The fibres are biodegradable and highly dyeable (low environmental impact). Organic cotton is grown without any agricultural toxins.

Uses

Mellowood® is primarily used for the production of underwear, as its properties are ideally suited for fabrics that are worn on the skin. However, research is on its way to also use Mellowood® for clothing such as sweaters. The type of clothing made from Mellowood® is mainly in the luxury segment, due to the combination of premium properties and the resulting higher raw material prices, such as Lyocell (more expensive than cotton).
