Melody Shekari (born February 2, 1988) is a Policy Fellow in the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee.[1] She is a Democratic Party candidate for Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District.[2]
Early life and education
Melody Shekari was born on February 2, 1988 in Bay City, Texas. She is the eldest daughter of David and Farah Shekari. At the age of four, her family moved to Chattanooga, TN when her father was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority. She attended Girls Preparatory School, where she was involved in Student Council, Youth Leadership, and Model UN. While a student at GPS, Melody was recognized as a Commended Scholar under the National Merit Scholarship Program, and was also inducted into the National Honors Society.[3][4] In addition, she won the National Peace Essay Contest sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace.[5] These achievements culminated in her receiving the Daughters of the American Revolution Award for outstanding citizenship at commencement ceremonies.[6]
Shekari continued her studies with a Trustee Scholarship at Bentley University's Honors Program, where she majored in Economics and International Relations.[7] During her undergraduate years, she volunteered at the Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General, at the elementary school level, and for adults with special needs. She graduated with honors (cum laude) in three years.
Following her undergraduate education, Shekari moved to Seattle and attained a Master of Public Administration at the University of Washington.[2] She would go on to earn a law degree from the University of Southern California.[2] While at USC, Shekari was President of the Graduate Student Government.[7] During this time, she worked on issues such as a travel grant program, financial accounting, and healthcare.[7]
