Mental health Emergency Rooms

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

A Mental health Emergency Room is an emergency room for patients with acute mental health problems.[1]

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 44,193 Americans die from suicide each year. It is the 10th leading cause of death in America.[2] The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) reports that one in eight ER visits by adults was related to the diagnosis of mental health or substance abuse conditions.[3]

In light of this situation, some hospitals have opened emergency rooms designed specifically for mental health crises. For example, Oregon opened its first psychiatric emergency facility at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in January 2017. The facility is designed to get people seen quickly to avoid suicide or any harm to themselves, and it will also offer short-term treatment. Close to one-third of community hospitals studied by the American Hospital Association (AHA) in 2001 reported having psychiatric emergency services.[4][5]
