Mephiles the Dark[lower-alpha 1] is a fictional character from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He is one half of Solaris who was initially sealed inside the Scepter of Darkness after being born during the Solaris Project, but was accidentally freed by Shadow, Rouge, and Doctor Eggman. He was introduced in the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog video game and has reappeared sparingly since.
Mephiles has a received a generally positive reception from video game journalists, often seen as one of the greater aspects of his debut game.

Main series
Mephiles first appears in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) as the main antagonist, where he was released from the Scepter of Darkness, took on Shadow's form, and spent the story manipulating Silver and Shadow while gathering Chaos Emeralds to reunite with Iblis and restore Solaris; after succeeding, he was ultimately erased from existence when Sonic and Elise prevented Solaris from ever being created.[1] Mephiles eventually returns as a boss in Shadow Generations (2024) fought by Shadow, who has no recollection of him due to '06's events being erased from the timeline. Mephiles attempts to take advantage of the time rift to restore himself to the timeline, but is defeated by Shadow.[2][3][4][5]
Spin-offs
Since his debut, Mephiles has mainly made appearances in spin-offs. He makes a small cameo in Sonic Rivals 2 (2007) as a collectible card, which is won by getting an S-Rank in any Knock-Out battle.[1] He appears as a playable character in Sonic Dash (2013),[6] Sonic Runners (2015),[7] and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle (2017).[6]
Reception
Mephiles has received a generally positive reception. Writing for Hardcore Gamer, Monica Philips considered Mephiles one of the best parts of Sonic '06, praising him as a cunning, menacing villain and an excellent foil to the heroes.[8] Similarly, WhatCulture's James Metcalfe argued that Mephiles was one of Sonic '06's few successful elements, praising him as a powerful, cunning, and effective villain.[9] Screen Rant's Jack Densmore praised Mephiles as an intelligent villain who stood out despite Sonic '06's problems, particularly for his successful manipulation of Silver, strong rivalry with Shadow, and memorable design and voice acting.[10] On the other hand, Matthew Lewallen of Total Apex Gaming believed Mephiles would have been creepier and more mysterious if he spoke less and only used other characters' voices while disguised.[11]
Merchandise
In 2021, a plush toy of Mephiles was announced by Great Eastern Entertainment.[12]
