Merry Ellen Kirk is an American songwriter, pianist, and vocalist known for her dream-like songs and placements in movies and television, as well as her alter ego, known as JOLENE.
Early life[edit]
Merry Ellen Kirk was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1990. She spent several years of her early childhood growing up in Mongolia, as her parents were Christian missionaries [1]. After her family came back to the United States and settled in Nashville, Tennessee, she began to realize that music would become an inescapable part of her life. Kirk attended high school at Franklin High School in Franklin, Tennessee. She performed at various venues in the Tennessee area and began songwriting at a very young age.
Career[edit]
Merry Ellen Kirk released her debut album “Invisible War” in 2009 to wide acclaim, many citing her as a mix between Ingrid Michaelson and Tori Amos. Soon afterward, she met fellow singer/songwriter Aaron Krause at a mutual friend’s house show. After collaborating extensively, they formed the duo The Shakespeares, releasing a self-titled EP in 2011. Krause then produced Kirk’s next album, “Firefly Garden” later that year. The next year, Kirk released a follow-up EP titled “Feather and a Leaf”.
Aaron Krause collaborated with Merry Ellen Kirk again and produced her next album, “We Are The Dreamers”, which was released in 2015. The album received noteworthy press[2] and placements on commercials and television worldwide[3], as well as “Stopping Traffic”, an independent film about sex trafficking.
Kirk released a handful of singles and the first EP of her innovative multi-media project and concept album series, Hemispheres, titled “Hemispheres | North” in 2020. Kirk now exclusively releases music under her dark pop project, JOLENE, described as a "glitch in the matrix that slipped through the cracks in the outer realm"[4] In mid-2021, Kirk released a YouTube video titled “Goodnight Moon from the Television Room”, in which she reads from a picture book and then goes to sleep. This launched the Hemispheres immersive website and storyline, a fictional alternate dimension where JOLENE, Merry Ellen Kirk’s alter ego, resides. Currently, Kirk is now releasing new music under the JOLENE moniker and updating the storyline with the release of each new single.
