Metronome is a 2008 graphic novel by British comic book artist Bryan Talbot under the pseudonym Veronique Tanaka. It is a wordless tale of a doomed relationship told non-linearly using a palette of reoccurring images, symbolism, and visual puns. An experimental endeavor for Talbot, it was all illustrated digitally on a strict sixteen-panel grid for a total of sixty-four pages in 4/4 time. Talbot, feeling that no one would recognize it as his work, decided to publish it under a pseudonym that combined the piece's French and manga influences. NBM, the publisher, accepted the book, not knowing it was by him after he'd claimed to be simply acting as Véronique's agent. He however did reveal Tanaka's identity to the publisher before it was to be published. Although released to a positive critical reception, it sold poorly. Talbot decided to reveal that he was behind it to see if it would improve sales. It did not.
