Mettaton is a fictional secondary antagonist and boss in the role-playing game Undertale, designed by Toby Fox. He is a ghost living inside a robotic body, working as a television host and human-eradication robot. The character has become a fan-favourite, due to his dramatic, flamboyant personality and humourous level of vanity.

Concept and Design

Mettaton was designed by Toby Fox for the role-playing game Undertale, released in 2015. His primary form was inspired by Cooker from Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Day Out, and his EX likely parodies Glam Rock Stars of the early 70s, especially David Bowie, who wore a very similar outfit in 1972, although Toby Fox is yet to confirm this. Early concept art for Mettaton EX is very similar to Shadow DIO from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and his finished sprite is also inspired by this Manga, his pink heart belt resembling Vanilla Ice’s, and and face stripes resembling Darby. Since the same Manga is referenced at other points in the game, it is likely that this is deliberate. According to Toby Fox, the Mettaton EX battle was the hardest boss fight to design.

Characteristics

Mettaton's primary form is made up of a grey box with arms, a screen for a face, and a single wheel underneath, which serves as his primary mode of locomotion. His EX form, activated during his boss fight is humanoid in shape, with a pink and black palette, shoulder-pads, high-heeled boots, bangs and a belt with a heart-shaped core in the middle. His NEO form is activated during the game's "Genocide Route" and is similar to Mettaton EX in appearance, but with wings, a cannon instead of a right hand and leg shaped pauldrons. Mettaton is vain, flamboyant, violent, ambitious and narcissistic. Obsessed with humanity, his greatest desire is to cross the barrier and become a celebrity on the surface. He is prepared to harm and even kill others to achieve this ambition, placing him into conflict with the human, whose soul could allow Mettaton to reach the surface. However, he also cares deeply for his cousin, Napstablook.

Appearances

When the human enters the Underground, Mettaton is enlisted by Alphys to pretend to attack them, so that Alphys can "save" them and be admired by the human. A series of conflicts are staged between the human and Mettaton, all of them broadcast on Mettaton's TV channel, MTT. At the planned fifth conflict, Mettaton reveals to the human that his attacks on them had been part of an act orchestrated by Alphys to try and make the human like her. He rebels against Alphys, and proceeds to genuinely attack the human, so he can take their soul, cross the barrier and become a celebrity among humans. Mettaton transforms into his EX form, and turns on the cameras to broadcast the fight. To win, the player must either raise the number of viewers to 10,000, by acting dramatically, and fire at Mettaton's heart-shaped core when it is exposed, or fight him until he is defeated. If Mettaton has not been killed he will then stop the fight in order to take calls from the audience to celebrate his 10,000 viewer milestone. The first caller is his cousin, Napstablook, whose call leads Mettaton to feel remorse, and decide not to leave the Underground, though claiming his reasoning is that his departure would leave "an aching void, that can never be filled.” However, his battery quickly runs out, and he powers down.

Neutral Route

Mettaton is briefly seen again in one of the neutral endings, if Toriel and Undyne have been killed, as the new ruler of the Underground, having “brainwashed everyone through his ... show and turned the underground into his personal paradise.” However, his excessive spending on monuments and his poor leadership and policies are implied to have caused “Economic collapse” and “Education problems”, and he is implied to either arrest or terminate citizens who don’t watch his show.

Pacifist Route

Mettaton is seen again in the Pacifist epilogue, reunited with his cousin Napstablook, though concealing his true identity as the ghost's cousin.<refToby Fox (September 2015). UNDERTALE. Genocide Route

Mettaton confronts the human at the end of the Hotlands, and transforms into his NEO form in order to kill them, and save the remaining monsters, but is quickly dispatched by the human.

Merchandise

An official hand-painted Mettaton figurine was released by Fangamer, as well as an official "Death By Glamour Shirt" which features Mettaton EX.
