Micah Tawlks (born October 22, 1984) is a producer, mixer, and songwriter based in Nashville, Tennessee. Tawlks has worked with Hayley Williams, COIN, Liza Anne, Reggie Watts, Josh Gilligan, Matthew Perryman Jones, Civil Twilight, Myzica, Louis Prince, Rowe, and The Brook & The Bluff.

Early life[edit]

Tawlks was born in Selma, California and grew up in the Sacramento area. In 2005 he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter. After recording his debut solo record in 2008, Tawlks shifted his focus to the studio, producing, mixing, and performing on records.[1]

Career[edit]

In 2012, Tawlks produced, engineered, and performed on Anchor & Braille's record The Quiet Life, alongside longtime collaborator Kevin Dailey.[2]

In the spring of 2014, Tawlks wrote the song "Ready or Not" with singer-songwriter Matthew Perryman Jones. On the heels of this, he formed the indie pop duo MYZICA alongside Isaaca Byrd, former bassist for The Bridges.[3] They released their self-titled EP in 2015 and their debut full-length Love & Desire in 2016. Nashville Scene praised Love & Desire as "unpretentious, casual, authentic pop that perfectly captures the simplicity and seriousness of young love."[1]

In 2014, Tawlks co-wrote the song "We Are Destroyer" alongside Stephen Christian for Anberlin’s final record Lowborn.[4]

In 2015, Tawlks engineered Civil Twilight’s third record, Story of an Immigrant.[5] Later that year, he produced the songs "Cold Answer" and "I’m Sorry" for Matthew Perryman Jones’s record, Cold Answer.[6]

Tawlks produced Josh Gilligan's singles "Absent Mind," released November 9, 2018, and "Quiet Together," released February 15, 2019.[7] He also did additional production and mixed "Slowly," released November 15, 2019.

In 2019, Tawlks produced The Brook & The Bluff's record First place.[8] He also produced two singles for Rowe, formerly of The Honey Trees: "Tired Love" and "Again," which were released in 2019 and 2020, respectively.[9]

Tawlks produced Louis Prince's debut full-length, Thirteen, which was released on March 13, 2020. The writing process for Thirteen began in 2015, with writer Jake McMullen bringing in Tawlks to "chart a new sonic path" for the record. Speaking of their collaboration, McMullen stated: “He encouraged me to do whatever I wanted to do. I brought in all of these ideas, and sometimes we ended up combining five different ideas into one song.”[10]

Tawlks engineered, co-produced, and mixed COIN's 2020 record Dreamland.[11]
