Michael Aram
Michael Aram Wolohojian, known professionally as Michael Aram, is an Armenian-American artist known for his sculptures in metal.
Early life
Aram's father, John Wolohojian, was an executive with Saks Fifth Avenue, Georg Jensen A/S, and Barneys New York, and Aram would accompany him to their stores.[1]
Aram received a bachelor’s degree in Art History at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine before traveling to the University of Florence to study fine arts.[2]
Career
Aram launched his first metalware collection in 1989, after a trip to India, where he worked with local craftspeople.[3][1]
In 2015, his stainless steel and bronze sculpture, "Migrations," was erected in St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral to commemorate the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.[4]
In 2016, he was commissioned to design a sculpture to be presented to Pope Francis on his visit to Armenia. The sculpture, atop a tufa base, represented Noah’s Ark, a dove, and an olive branch.[2]
His company's headquarters were moved from New York City to West Palm Beach, Florida in 2020.[5]
Personal life
Aram is gay. In 2014,[1] he married Aret Tikiryan, and they have two children, Anabel and Thadeus. Aram has stated that "My family is very traditional in many ways, and much like other families – except for the fact that we are an Armenian same-sex couple. We are very involved in the Armenian community and had our son and daughter baptized at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral."[3]
He and his family moved from New York City to Palm Beach, Florida at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.[5]
