Michael Devine (born September 28, 1971) is an American actor and singer. As an actor, he is known for movies such as The Wolf of Wall Street (2013 film), and Inside Man (2006) and television shows, most notably as James "Tech" Padgett on the CBS series Limitless (TV series). As a singer, he performed as a ceremonial soloist for the New York City Police Department.

Life and career[edit]

Devine was born in Queens, New York, and raised in Clifton, New Jersey. His father, Thomas J. Devine, was a Special Agent in the Drug Enforcement Administration, who was shot and wounded during an undercover operation in 1972. Left paralyzed, his father returned to work and received the Drug Enforcement Administration's Purple Heart Award,[1] but subsequently died of his injuries on September 25, 1982.[2]

Michael Devine earned a Bachelor of the Fine Arts degree in Acting from Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey and Middlesex University in London. Shortly after graduating, Devine decided to follow in his father's footsteps and became a law enforcement officer.[3] He is currently a Detective Sergeant in the New York Police Department, but continues to work as an actor and not surprisingly, often plays a cop. His first professional role was an a uniformed officer on the NBC television show, Third Watch.[4]

Finding further opportunities to merge his dual careers, Devine served as the NYPD's National Anthem soloist (2003 - 2014) and has performed at Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center, and the Rainbow Room. After performing in many police memorials, including the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial[5] in Washington, DC, Devine recorded an album of memorial ballads entitled, "Songs of Valor and Hope."[6] His second album, "Sentinels," will be released in 2017.

He has also appeared on the television shows Orange Is the New Black, 30 Rock, House of Cards, Alpha House, Mozart in the Jungle, Blue Bloods (TV series), The Americans, Damages and Person of Interest (TV series).[7]
