Michael G. Cox
Michael Cox (Born June 18, 1985) is a candidate for the 25th New York State Senate District.[1] He was formerly an advisor in the Obama administration,[2] and to Congressman Dan Maffei,[3] and Congressman Gregory Meeks.[4] Cox was also appointed by the Obama Administration to the United States Department of Commerce where he worked to advance Barack Obama's economic agenda.
Cox is the co founder of Business Sunday - a federal economic initiative to support growing businesses.[1] He also developed strategies to get private companies engaged in the My Brother's Keeper program.
Prior to his service in Congress, Cox worked as a public school teacher in East New York, Brooklyn through the Teach For America program.[2]
Early Life and Education[edit]
In 2008 Cox graduated from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public affairs.[2] In 2010, following his undergraduate studies, Cox earned a Master of Science in Education from Fordham University.[2] He has also completed Master of Public Administration and Masters of Economics work at New York University Wagner and Gallatin graduate schools.[1] Cox is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.[5]
Federal Work and Achievements[edit]
Cox started his work in government as a policy advisor to Dan Maffei and Gregory Meeks on issues of education, labor, small business, healthcare, criminal justice, and civil rights issues in order to combat the systematic injustices he witnessed.[1]
In the House of Representatives, Cox advised the Obama Administration on the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African American Students and served on the Congressional Black Caucus Education Task Force.[1]
Later, the Obama Administration appointed Cox to the United States Department of Commerce where he worked to advance Obama's economic agenda serving as an advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Economic Development and the Assistant Secretary of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs.[2]
Cox is the co-creater of Business Sunday,[1] an initiative which connects business leaders from communities around the United States of America with federal resources.[6]
In July 2016 Cox received a certificate of appreciation from a public high school in Queens, New York where he helped secure funding to rebuild a music studio.[7]
Campaign 2016[edit]
Michael Cox is a candidate in the Democratic primary against incumbent Velmanette Montgomery for the 25th State Senate District.
His platform is centered on increasing social mobility and breaking cycles of poverty.[8]
