Michael Jackson: Royal Brunei Concert (July 16, 1996)
The Royal Brunei Concert was a free concert performed by Michael Jackson in celebration of The Sultan Of Brunei's 50th birthday. The concert was held at the Jerudong Park Amphitheater. It was reported that the Amphitheater was built just for the occasion.[1] The theater is now used for events held at the amusement park. The Sultan was not in attendance, but was in attendance on December 31, 1996 when Michael performed at the theater again for his HIStory World Tour. It was reported that Jackson was paid $17 million to do the concert. A private dinner with The Sultan, Prince Charles, Michael Jackson and 3,000 other people was held at Istana Nurul Iman's banquet hall after the show.[2]

Background[edit]
Michael Jackson was invited to Bandar Seri Begawan to perform a free concert for the Sultan Of Brunei's 50th birthday. The concert resembled Jackson´s 1992 - 1993 Dangerous World Tour, the concert first was supposed to be a mixture of both Bad World Tour and Dangerous World Tour but was later cut down to the Dangerous setlist. Jackson wore the Black and Gold military jacket for Jam in which he used for the Dangerous Tour opening night and third leg. Michael wore his infamous fencing outfit which was the signature costume for the Dangerous Tour. The Smooth Criminal jacket that was worn during the show was also used during all legs of the Dangerous Tour. The setlist originally included: Another Part of Me, Rock With You, Bad , Dirty Diana and Heal The World. This concert marks the debut performances of Earth Song, and You Are Not Alone. This concert also marks the final performances of Jam, Human Nature, I Just Can't Stop Loving You and She's Out Of My Life. These songs where later rehearsed for his 2009 concert residency, which were later canceled due to his sudden death. The HIStory World Tour was kept a close secret.[3]
Notable changes and moments[edit]
- Jam had a much shorter ending.
- This show marked the final time Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' was performed at a fast pace.
- I Just Can't Stop Loving You was performed with Marva Hicks instead of Siedah Garrett. Marva Hicks accidentally sang Michael's part causing Michael to get noticeably aggravated. The song was continued for a few more bars by Jackson's music director Brad Buxer. After noticing what happened, Jackson started repetitively singing "Jobs Gone! It's a breakdown!". Michael then turns directly at Brad and shouts, "Brad what are you gonna do!? What are you gonna do!?". At that moment, Brad ended the song.
- This concert also marked the final time Billie Jean was performed fully live. The instrumentation for Billie Jean was slower than Jackson's Bad and Dangerous World Tour. Making November 13, 1993 the final time Billie Jean was performed at a faster pace.
- The Way You Make Me Feel replaced Working Day and Night. The intro for The Way You Make Me Feel from the 1988 Grammy Awards was used during the show. After the intro, the beginning instrumentation began then skipped the entire first verse. Marva Hicks represented "The Girl" for the performance instead of Stacy Walker.
- Beat It was sung fully live for the last time until the 30th anniversary concerts. Michael completely forgot the second verse to Beat It.
- You Are Not Alone was replaced with Will You Be There. Making November 13, 1993 the final performance of Will You Be There.
- The 1995 MTV Video Music Awards version of Dangerous was present during the concert. Making November 13, 1993 the final time the full version of the song was performed.
- Man in the Mirror ended with a curtain call.
- Earth Song was performed as an encore, meaning that it was added to represent the HIStory album.
