Michael Massimilla (born 1961) is an American software engineer, as well as a hobbyist video game developer and contract bridge player. He was one of the co-founders of DealerTrack (now a subsidiary of Cox Automotive), a provider of IT services to auto dealerships; a technology vice president for JPMorgan Chase; a co-founder of Juno Online Services, a pioneer of free internet email; a software engineer at D. E. Shaw & Co., a New York hedge fund; a founder and vice president of Masterplay Publishing, a computer game development firm; and a packet switch engineer at BBN Technologies in the 1980s, where many internet technologies were first developed.[2] He was a teaching fellow under Harry R. Lewis at Harvard University.[3]

On Halloween 1982, Harvard professor Harry Lewis' teaching assistants appeared at his home in "Harry Lewis" costume. Massimilla is at center.[4]

Together with Walter Freitag and Rick Dutton, Massimilla co-founded the Society for Interactive Literature (SIL) at Harvard University in 1982.[5] The club's first public event was Rekon-1 in February 1983, at the Boskone science fiction convention. This event is considered to be the birth of Theatre-style live-action role-playing games (LARP), one of the main styles of LARP.[6]

Together with Andrew C. Greenberg, Rick Dutton, and Walter Freitag, Massimilla developed the games Star Saga One: Beyond the Boundary and Star Saga: Two - The Clathran Menace in 1988-1989,[7] his role being the primary programmer.[8] Both were released by Masterplay Publishing. The role-playing video games combine a computerized game arbiter with a game board and books of printed text.

Massimilla is a lifelong contract bridge player with the rank of ACBL Gold Life Master.[9] He wrote 7 articles for The Bridge World between 1994-2013, and with his partner Louis Glasthal, he appeared in its Challenge the Champs feature 4 times between 2013-2017.[10]

Massimilla is an amateur theater reviewer. He is in the top ten all-time reviewers on Show-Score, where he has published more than 700 reviews since the website was founded in 2015.[11]
