Biography[edit]

Slobodchikoff is one of the foremost scholars on the international relations phenomenon known as treaty nesting[1] or the cooperation that results from states being included in multilateral treaties.[2]

Research and publications[edit]

An expert on Russia, Ukraine, the former Soviet states, international conflict and peace[3][4][5], and comparative politics,[6][7] Slobodchikoff has dedicated recent years to examining the crisis which has developed between the West and Russia; specifically Ukraine and to the concept known as treaty nesting. The result has been the publication of four books and many peer-reviewed journal articles articles.[8]

Slobodchikoff's book Cultural Imperialism and the Decline of the Liberal Order: Russian and Western Soft Power in Eastern Europe and is coauthored with Political Scientist G. Doug Davis.

Michael O. Slobodchikoff has posited that treaty networks is a way of studying and understanding the creation of the liberal international order.  He has found that Russia is indeed challenging the Liberal International Order, and that the liberal international order is at a crossroads.[9]

Slobodchikoff, along with his co-authors G. Doug Davis and Brandon Stuart published The Challenge to NATO: Global Security and the Atlantic Alliance in November or 2021 that analyzes the predicaments that NATO is facing in the current political climate.

His most recent publication co-authored with Aakriti A. Tandon, India as Kingmaker, As India finds itself in the envious position of kingmaker, both the status quo and revisionist major powers are jockeying for India’s support for either upholding or revising the current world order. Using India’s bilateral treaties as a proxy measure of the strength of its relationship with other major powers, Slobodchikoff and Tandon determine whether India will remain neutral in its foreign policy approach or adopt a more assertive role in shaping the future global order.[10]

Contributions to international relations and treaty nesting[edit]

Slobodchikoff has published numerous papers on Russia, Eurasia, and East-West relations.[11] However, Slobodchikoff is best know for his work on the International Relations phenomenon known as treaty nesting.[12]

Media[edit]

Slobodchikoff is a regular contributor to Russia Direct[13], the Russian International Affairs Council[14] and has often provided analysis on Russian relations with Ukraine for BBC World News[15]. He has served as an analyst on Russian relations with the United States for Voice of Russia Radio[16] and previously served as an instructor at the University of Arizona and director of international student advising at Southeastern University in Washington, D.C. During the 2014 Ukraine crisis, Slobodchikoff was a go to person for several news agencies including the BBC, providing up to date analysis as the situation developed[17][18]. Likewise when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) was shot down over Ukraine in 2014, Slobodchikoff provided expert analysis on what could be expected from the outcome of the tragedy[19][20]. In February of 2022, Slobodchikoff joined BBC World News to comment on the meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the ongoing 2021–2022 Russo-Ukrainian crisis.[21]
