Michael Pemberton (Born 1974) is a British abstract and figurative painter.[1][2]
Early life and education[edit]
Pemberton was born in Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham UK in 1974. He was educated at Rugby School and Chelsea School of Fine Art in London and later studied at Slade School of Fine Art and The Ruskin School of Art.[1]
Career[edit]
Pemberton focuses on the energy and form of the human subject in his career as an abstract and figurative painter.[3][4] In 2006, he presented The Toxic Series , his first solo exhibition in Mayfair, London at The Music Room Gallery.[5]
In 2010, Pemberton moved to New York where he explored new abstract language resulting in a body of work on canvas and paper captioned Inner Lands.[6]
In 2015, he moved his studio to Los Angeles where he created a series of large-scale paintings titled Uninhabitable Land.[7] A solo exhibition of these works were mounted in Los Angeles at Husar Fine Arts in 2015.[7]
In 2016, Pemberton created a series of large-scale abstract paintings and paper works titled Forms of Ambiguity.[8] These were exhibited at three LA galleries all operated by Husar Fine Art in 2016 and 2017.[8] In 2018, he exhibited a series of abstract paintings; Inexactitudes at Chali Rosso Gallery in Vancouver.[9] He also did an exhibition of his previous abstract works at Mouche Gallery in Beverly Hills.[10]
In 2018, Pemberton diverted into figurative painting with greater focus on human feeling. He presented his new imaginary way of painting with a series titled Inner Human.[11]
In 2022 he had a solo exhibition in Paris titled Human Reformation at Galerie 208 and a solo exhibition in Mayfair, London titled Human Atmosphere at JC Gallery.[11] His work has influences of the painters known as the School of London such as Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud as well as mid-century modernists such as Alberto Giacometti and Pablo Picasso.[11]

- 2020 - Forms of Ambiguity and Inner Human, in an exhibition titled The Most Beautiful Night of our Lives, with PAG Art, Mexico City[12]
- 2022 - Select works from Human Frequency Series at JC Gallery Mayfair London in a group show titled 'Striking Bold'.[13]
- 2022 - Entire series of works as a solo show named Human Reformation at Galerie 208 Paris[8]
