Michael Yeung Ming-cheung controversies

Michael Yeung Ming-cheung (楊鳴章), who took over from John Tong Hon as the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong in August 2017, has made various statements over the years have sparked controversies.

Li Ka-shing[edit]

In October 2010, Reverend Thomas Law, at the time the priest of Mother of Good Counsel Church in San Po Kong, called local business magnate Li Ka-shing "a cannibalistic devil" ([食人嘅魔鬼] error: {{lang}}: unrecognized language tag: zh-yue (help)).[1] It was reported that in the following days, Li dispatched an intermediary to Yeung, then Auxiliary Bishop, to express Li's displeasure. The intermediary reportedly asked the church to correct the statement, or face legal action.[2][3]

Days later, Christian media outlet Christian Times published an article, stating that Yeung has spoken with Li over the phone, and apologized over the incident.[4] The report cited the Diocese Chancellor, Lawrence Lee.[4] According to reports, Li later said he will not suspend his support and donations to the Diocese, as a result.[5]

Yeung later denied, via Diocese publication Kung Kao Po, that he ever apologized to Li,[6] but for years after the incident, Yeung was criticized for taking the side of Li, which led to allegations that Yeung (and by extension, the Diocese) was flattering and cozying up to the rich and powerful in Hong Kong.[7][8]

Almost four years after the incident, Yeung once again denied ever apologizing to Li, and criticized the press for refusing to let go of the issue, "like a dog".[9]

Paul Chan Mo-po[edit]

Yeung has defended former Secretary for Development (now Financial Secretary) Paul Chan Mo-po, while the latter was embroiled in a land development scandal in 2013, saying he was known Chan prior to Chan's election as a Legislative Council member in 2008, and that Chan is "not a bad person".[10]

At the time, Chan was mired in scandals and controversies. In the year prior to the land development scandal, Chan was accused of owning and operating subdivided flats in 2012, in violation of Hong Kong's building code.[11] In that same year, accused of driving under the influence of alcohol,[12] and sued by the parents of two students who attended Chinese International School. The parents accused Chan of defamation, alleging that Chan accused their twins of cheating during an exam, and accusing Chan of insinuating that the two were let off the hook, due to the parent's position on the school's Board of Directors.[13]

Caritas Hong Kong[edit]

In November 2013, Caritas Hong Kong was criticized for allegedly asking its workers to watch local broadcaster TVB's annual anniversary gala telecast. The request was allegedly made in an effort to help the show attain high ratings, in exchange for a donation by TVB of HKD$3 million to a number of charities in Hong Kong, including Caritas.[14][15]

Yeung, who was Caritas' head at the time, said the incident was "a joke".[14][15]

Occupy Central[edit]

Yeung has been criticized for comparing those who took part in the 2014 Hong Kong protests to those who use drugs.[16]

Sexual orientation[edit]

In 2015, during the District Council elections, then Hong Kong Bishop John Tong Hon asked voters to consider a candidate's stance on the anti-sexual orientation discrimination legislation, before casting their ballots.[17] In his defence of Tong, Yeung was criticized for comparing homosexuality to drug abuse.[17][18] Yeung claimed he was misquoted,[19] but the controversy later became one of the reasons behind a November 2016 protest by graduating students, during their graduation ceremony at Caritas Institute of Higher Education.[20]

Carrie Lam[edit]

After his appointment as Bishop of Hong Kong, news surfaced of Yeung's close ties with Carrie Lam, who is the 5th Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Due to past criticisms that Yeung flatters and kowtows to the rich and powerful in the city,[7][8] there was some discussion of Yeung's ties with Lam. Yeung later said Lam is a Catholic, and he has had good ties with Lam for years. Yeung also said he has known Lam on a professional level, during her time as the Director of the Social Welfare Department, and that he has no reasons to reject her, and sever ties.[21][22]

Relations with other priests in the Diocese[edit]

Reports have surfaced over the years that Yeung's relations with other priests in the Dioceses are less than cordial,[23] or even outright poor.[24] There are concerns that Yeung will face challenges in personnel management.[23]

China[edit]

In Taiwanese reports of his appointment as Hong Kong's Bishop, Yeung was described as having a Pro-Beijing political orientation.[25][26]

Freedom of religion in China[edit]

Catholic faithfuls in Mainland China have criticized Yeung, in addition to his predecessor, for not voicing enough concerns over their plight, including the Chinese government's tendency to arbitrarily detain priests, or put them on house arrest.[27][28] In response, Yeung said the church can't go too far, and that they can't "chase a dog into a dead-end alley".[27]

Destruction of Chinese churches[edit]

The removal of crosses from church buildings in China (and in some cases, wholesale demolition of churches) has attracted some controversy around the world.[29][30][31][32] Yeung, after his appointment as Bishop, was criticized for allegedly defending Chinese authorities on the issue during a news conference,[33][34] saying the controversy may involve "structural issues",[34] and said since China has regulations on religion, he will respect their rules.[35]

Dr. Chan Sze Chi, a Senior Lecturer at the Hong Kong Baptist University Department of Religion and Philosophy, criticized Yeung's comments as showing a "very weak posture". Chan said the comments reflect that Yeung has no courage to take the responsibility of defending religious freedom, and as such, there should be no expectation of him defending Hong Konger's interests.[36]

Kenneth Chan Ka-lok, former Legislative Council of Hong Kong member and an Associate Professor at the Hong Kong Baptist University Department of Government and International Studies, said Yeung has given an impression of "don't bother me with issues", and that his attitude on big issues like the cross removal controversy is that of "avoidance" and "seeing which way the wind blows", which, in Chan's opinion, is equal to excusing acts of a dictator.[36]

Lee Cheuk-yan, former LegCo member and a practicing Catholic, said he is disappointed in Yeung, and citing biblical tales, said he does not have the courage shown in David vs. Goliath.[36]
