Michal Korman (born 1987) is a Slovak[1] painter based in France. His work combines traditional figurative oil painting with graphic design elements, and is influenced by Japanese art. He is represented internationally by Pearl Lam Galleries and has exhibited in institutions and galleries in Europe, Asia, and the United States.

Early life and education

Korman showed an interest in art at an early age. At the age of five, he was admitted to children’s courses at the local school of fine arts by Slovak academic painter Jozef Jelenák, whose teaching was rooted in the tradition of Expressionism. Over three years, Jelenák provided the foundations of his artistic training.

Career

In 2005, Korman developed a distinctive style based on figurative oil painting with a graphic quality, characterized by a signature conceived as a logotype. He has spent extended periods in Japan, where he studied woodblock prints and developed a particular interest in the Rimpa school and Ukiyo-e. Japanese aesthetics have had a significant influence on his work.

In 2020, Korman held a solo exhibition at the Setouchi City Museum of Art in Okayama, Japan.[2] In 2023, he began a collaboration with Pearl Lam Galleries, which represents him internationally.[3]

Artistic style

Korman’s painting combines traditional figurative oil techniques with a structured graphic sensibility. His work often explores floral motifs, cultural references, and decorative patterns influenced by both European and Japanese traditions.

Exhibitions

Korman has held solo and group exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the United States. In 2024, his work was shown at the Musée Yves Brayer in Les Baux-de-Provence, France, in a cross-dialogue exhibition with Yves Brayer titled Contrepoint.[4] In the same year, he presented Flower Narrative at LPM, Miami, during Art Basel Miami week.[5][6]

In 2025, he exhibited Les Fleurs du jour at Pearl Lam Galleries in Shanghai,[7] and presented The Rendezvous for an Innocent Walk at Sketch London, in collaboration with Pearl Lam Galleries.[8][9]

Critical reception

Korman’s exhibitions have been covered by international art and culture publications, including Forbes, Designboom, Showstudio, and ICON Magazine, which have highlighted the distinctive fusion of decorative and figurative elements in his work.[10]
