Jason Innocent (French: [ʤeɪs(ə)nˈɪnəsənt], born January 7, 1995)[3] is a New York-based conceptual artist. His work explores race, language, and contemporary social issues.[4]
Background[edit]
Innocent was born and raised in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn, New York City, on January 7, 1995. His parents are of Haitian descent. Innocent attended Murry Bergtraum High School and later graduated from Medgar Evers College. Innocent became interested in art at an early age and was influenced by the works of William S. Burroughs, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Marcel Duchamp.[5][4]
Career[edit]
Innocent began spraying street graffiti writings on buildings in Lower Manhattan. The designs featured inscribed messages such as "JASON INNOCENT 2012", DEAD IN THE WATER, THE WICKED NEVER REST, WOUND ITCH WHEN THEY HEAL” and “LOST COME FOUNDED ME[6]. His first notable solo exhibition, Wall 2016, took place in Brooklyn in 2016.[7] [8]In September 2016, Innocent collaborated with [[Getty Image]]'s photographer Alex Wong to create an "unofficial campaign poster" for Donald Trump with the phrase "Ego Maniac" added. According to Innocent, the work aims to reclaim the importance of every vote.[9] [10]Innocent authored his first artist book titled 39 Drawings in 2017[11][12]. It feature Innocent's drawing as a child.[13] Innocent likes to studies words and read books on his free time.[14] In 2018, Innocent released American Flag 2017. An attempt to reimagine the American flag. The flag included text such as text like NO RACISM, NO SEXISM, NO ABLEISM, NO FATPHOBIA, NO AGEISM, NO TRANSPHOBIA, NO HOMOPHOBIA, and NO HATEFULNESS.[15] In 2019, Innocent's second solo exhibition took place in October 2019 at 526 East 11th Street, New York. In 2020, Innocent was included in a group show at Columbia University for Beyond the Bars: Freedom Plans[16][17]. In 2020 Innocent released his video art entitled "beauty in the midst of chaos" The work consists of a series of found images and video clips depicting a range of Black American experiences throughout history. Among many other clips exploring African American life and resiliency, the video essay juxtaposes recordings of police violence and footage from the Civil Rights Movement with clips of Black artistry, pop culture, celebration, and creativity[18].[19]. In 2021 he did his residencies at Kunstraum.[20][21]
Artistic styles[edit]
Innocent works across all mediums displays a childlike fascination with the process of creating. Innocent said that he change his drawing to more [[abstract]] and [[figuration]] drawing.[10] Anthony Huffman states that "draws upon disparate vernaculars, including source material from street culture (signage and slang), popular culture (cartoons and film), and academic textbooks (diagrams, graphs, and formulas)".[21]
