Michel Papillon

Michel (Miguel) Papillon (1744-1825) was born into slavery at Poste de Saint Jean Baptiste des Natchitoches, now known as Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site. Papillon stood as the patriarch of one of the most illustrious Creole families in the Americas.[1]

Papillon married Eulalie Simon in Opelousas, Lousiana in 1797 and purchased his freedom from slave owner, Don Manuel Antonio De Soto Bermiudez in 1799.[2]
