About Mick Marlow

Living through the Second World War in London, Mick had a tough teenage upbringing in a single parent family and had more than a few near misses, particularly through the Blitz. After finishing his national service, Mick started work in Wembley where he was inspired to take up running. He soon joined Highgate Harriers in the early 1950s within John Hovell’s squad who were dominant in the UK at the time. After having four children, he decided he needed to move to a more family-friendly area and moved to Crowthorne. He then started training at Bracknell Athletics Club in 1964, becoming the boys’ coach soon after.

Coaching

His philosophy was to develop a squad that worked hard and enjoyed doing it. This worked, and during the 1960s he coached such notable athletes as Ian Kilpatrick, Billy Whiting, Bob Weatherley and George Baxter, all of whom achieved international honors. During the 1970s he coached a further group of internationals including Nigel Martin, Guy Dwelly, Jim Wise, Alan Kirby and Terry Murphy, and these all won national and regional medals.

His athletes' achievements

In the 1980s and 90s he coached his son Gary, who achieved the highest level of any of his athletes (he was a regular international and ran a 800m world-class time of 1.46.16 in 1985). Alongside Gary, Mick also coached his other son Alan (1.53 for 800), Brian Brackstone (3.46 for 1500), Antony Brewer (3.51 for 1500), Paul Daly (8.08 for 3000m), Richard Gooderham (14.10 for 5000m), Ian Croft (1.52 for 800) and dozens more club/county level athletes.

In the 2000s he also coached Richard Larsen (1.52 for 800), Jake Hughes (4.01 for 1500), Jamie Ashton (15.15 for 5000), Ed Cock (1.58 for 800), Alex Mouridian (15.50 for 5000m) and Adam Moore, who won four successive 800 titles at the English Schools (1.51 for 800).

An end to a successful career

After more than 45 years as a driving force at Bracknell AC, he retired from coaching and lives in Crowthorne with his wife Agnes.
