Midnight North is an American rock band formed in San Francisco. Their sound fits into the "cosmic American music" genre first described by Gram Parsons [1] and as such it combines country and rock with inventive songwriting.

Guitarist and singer-songwriter, and son of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, Grahame Lesh together with bassist Connor O’Sullivan, founded Midnight North in early 2012. They recruited Elliott Peck, a guitarist, pianist, and singer-songwriter, and Alex Jordan, a singer and multi-instrumentalist, to round out the original lineup.

Terrapin Crossroads Residency[edit]

After forming, the band had a residency at Terrapin Crossroads, the restaurant and venue established by Jill and Phil Lesh. "We were able to try out new material in front of a live audience, which helped to vastly accelerate the development of our live show,” says Elliott Peck. [2] A variety of local and national acts regularly play or visit the venue, which has given Midnight North exposure to many talented peers and mentors.

Under the Lights[edit]

Midnight North’s 2017 release, Under the Lights, has been critically acclaimed. Relix magazine says, "It draws up images of American landscapes and hot stage lights, as soulful, harmonized vocals wrap around twangy guitars and crisp drums."[3]

The songs were conceived and perfected while touring in support of previous material,[3] and the album "emphasizes concise songwriting and arrangements that showcase the band’s vocals and harmonies." [2]

Benefit for Hurricane Relief[edit]

On October 6, 2017, Midnight North was joined by Grateful Dead founding members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh at a benefit for victims of storms in Texas and Florida.[4]

Peach Music Festival 2018[edit]

Rolling Stone magazine named Midnight North "Best New Act" at the Peach Music Festival 2018. The magazine said that the band "takes the best parts of roots music and weaves them into a tapestry of rock and Americana," and praised their performance as ranging from "soulful rock simplicity" to "a cool blend of swamp-funk and gospel."[5]
