'Mihajlo Pavlović (Serbian Cyrillic: Михајло Павловић; Božurnja, Šumadija, 13 January 1841 - Kruševac, Kingdom of Serbia, 25 June 1915) was a well-known Belgrade merchant, member of the Management Board of the National Bank, president of the Serbian Credit Bank and Member of parliament. [1]
Biography[edit]
Mihajlo Pavlović was born in Božurnja, near Topola. After finishing primary school, he became an apprentice in a trade, and two years later kalfa. [1] Mihajlo later moved to Belgrade and was a journeyman in a shop Antonije Pajović, where he met Kosta Mesarović. The two of them joined forces and in 1865 opened the company "Mesarović and Pavlović" in Belgrade, [1] new manufacturing wholesale. Their shop was first located in the house Mijailo Mijović, on the corner of Dubrovačka (today King Peter Street) and Uzun Mirkova Street. Somewhat later, in 1871, they moved the shop to the house Jovan Kumanudi, on the corner of Knez Mihailova and Dubrovačka streets. [2]
Mihajlo Pavlović progressed quickly, so he gained a lot of capital by saving, [3] which enabled him in 1884 to buy Turkish shops and warehouses along Knez Mihailova ulica (street) between the then Dubrovačka to Rajićeva streets, and demolished them all. At that place, he built a large two-story building, on the ground floor of which there was a spacious shop with two compartments and a glazed office, while his family lived in the apartment on the first floor. [3]
After the death of his partner Kosta Mesarović (1886), he became a member of the board National Bank of Serbia. [1]
Mihajlo Pavlović was the president of the Serbian Credit Bank. He actively participated in the work of the Main Trade and Crafts Committee, and then founded and participated in the work of the Serbian Trade Association. [4]
He was a member of the Progressive Party and a member of the National Assembly in 1882 and 1894-1896. [1]
Pavlović was in a delegation that unsuccessfully tried to dissuade the king Aleksandar Obrenović from marrying Draga Mašin. [1]
He built a school in his native Božurnja, in memory of his family and parents.
Mihajlo Pavlović died in Kruševac in 1915. [1]
