Mike Sun (Chinese: 孙耀宁; pinyin: Sūn Yàoníng) (born 15 October 1960) is a Chinese American artist, director, erhu player, actor and American-Sino culture and arts exchange ambassador. He began learning the Chinese instrument erhu as a child and has solid music foundation and appreciation of art. Sun has lived in the U.S. since the early 1990s. He has often acted as chief director in many types of shows.[1]

Stage Directing[edit]

Sun and his coworkers founded the large annual variety shows American Chinese New Year’s Gala in 2004 which has continued to today[2][3][4][5],.[6] Around the same time, he also founded the large annual Christmas musical shows Love Changes Everything[7],.[8] Even though it was difficult in the beginning, his shows gradually became popular and attracted attentions from different corners.[7] In addition, Sun also founded or cofounded many large musical shows, variety shows, drama, etc., and acted as chief director. They include the large musical show Night with Moon and Hometown Love, Chinese New Year’s Gala Crossing the Pacific, Pre-Olympic large variety and musical show Splendid China-Cheer for Beijing, large variety show The Five-Stared Red Flag, I am Proud of Beijing, drama Li Xiangjun, etc.,[1] show of Southern California Chinese American Celebrating the 50-Year Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China (director), show of Southern California Chinese American Celebrating the 55-Year Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China (executive director), show of Southern California Chinese American Celebrating the 60-Year Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China (chief director) and so on. Currently he is working on For World Peace, a large digital song and dance epic show for the 70th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and Sino-Japanese War and acts as a chief director.

Other Experiences[edit]

Beside stage directing, Sun also participated in the preparation of the large variety show for the 1997 return of Hong Kong to China, responsible for Chinese folk music. He cofounded the Beijing Olympic Games Global Organizing Committee, acting as chief producer, participated in the preparation of the Overseas Chinese Federation “Embrace China” large theme variety show, also took part in the preparation and acting as general director for audio, lighting and stage layout for the performance organized to welcome Chairman Xi Jinping’s Los Angeles stop during his visit to the U.S. in 2012, organized for First American Waist Drum Team at the National Independence Day Parade in Washington, DC and acted as chief director, organized for Chinese American Marching Team at the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California and acted as chief director, organized for Chinese American Marching Team at the Fiesta Bowl Parade in Arizona 2005年Fiesta Bowl Parade and also acted as chief director.

Culture and Arts Exchange Activities[edit]

Sun is currently the Chairman of N&N Media Group, U.S., President of the Chinese American Federation of Culture & Arts, Vice Chairman of the Chinese American Federation, Vice Chairman of the American Chinese Culture Association, and a member of the China Association for International Culture Exchanges with Overseas Chinese. He works with the overseas Chinese American enterprises and Chinese American leaders, conducts American-Sino Culture and Arts Exchange Activities, and promotes Chinese culture to the world[9][10],.[11] He has brought U.S. politicians and film artists to China for economic and culture exchange. One such example was the governor of Arizona and her party.[12] He organized American-Sino culture and arts exchange activities in U.S. societies, working with the Los Angeles County and City governments as well as the Hollywood Christmas Parade Organizing Committee in order to organize culture, economic and trade exchange activities. He also introduced and recommended Chinese embroidery samples to the United Nations for permanent collection at the 57th of the UN Commission on the Status of Women,[13] started a permanent collection of Chinese embroidery in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles; and organized a show by the Chinese American Culture and Arts Performance Group at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. Additionally, he promoted the Chinese instrument erhu in the US mainstream societies through performing tours in New York, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Phoenix, Washington DC, and other cities, twice led the Chinese American performance team to perform at the Los Angeles Dodgers the Major League Baseball All-Star Games, and worked with Jiangsu TV, Beijing TV, Tianjin TV, Zhejiang TV, Wenzhou TV and many other television stations in China to carry out American-Sino culture exchange activities. He expanded the large variety show American Chinese New Year’s Gala to China; expanded Embrace China, Handshake with the World American Chinese New Year’s Gala to Wenzhou, China; invited China, Hong Kong and Taiwan’s top artists to perform at the large Christmas musical shows of Love Changes Everything for culture exchange; did fund raising at the large Christmas musical shows of Love Changes Everything and delivered the donations to China to help rural area students and disabled children in need of assistance[7],.[8] Mike Sun was accepted into the Chinese Role Model Database of the Would Chinese Venture Model Association in 2014.[14] He received the American-Sino Film and TV Culture Exchange Ambassador Award in the Second Sino-American International Television Festival in 2015, Los Angeles.

Film and Television[edit]

Sun has directed a number of documentary films, acting as director for the documentary films Development and Future and Horizon Discovery, and as screenwriter and director for documentary film Hotspot Issues Revelation for CCTV, etc. The Hotspot Issues Revelation has 6 episodes, reflect six hotspot issues of China and America, i.e. road of enriching people, safety of people’s livelihood, order of markets, spirit of ecology, people of urban and rural, dream of revival.[15] In addition, Mike Sun acted in annual event television drama series Furong Brocade.
