Mikhail Torich (born April 7, 1982) is a New York City based music video director, cinematographer, photographer, and video artist.
Early life[edit]
Born and raised in Leningrad, Soviet Union, Torich graduated from the Institute of Television Business and Design, St. Petersburg with a degree in Broadcast Design. In 2010, Torich received permanent U.S. residentship as “an artist of extraordinary ability”.
Music Videos and Short Films[edit]
In 2010, Torich directed Sin with Sebastian's “That's All? (I'm Not Satisfied)”, featured on MTV Europe. In 2011, his art film “Hold Me Closer” premiered at the CologneOFF Nomadic Art Festival.[1] That same year his video art film "Hold Me Closer" premiered at LIQUID CITIES & TEMPORARY IDENTITIES – CROATIA video art festival.[2]
The following year, his short film “Testo” received the Best Experimental Film Award at the World Music & Independent Film Festival. Torich also collaborated with queer musician AB Soto on “Honey Boo Boo”. In 2013, he directed Crystal Waters “Oh Mama Hey” and was the cinematographer for RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4 winner Sharon Needles' single, “Call Me on the Ouiji Board".[3] That same year, Torich’s short film “Nothing” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival - Cannes Court Métrage.
In 2015, Torich directed Lady Bunny’s “Going to the Chapel (of Kim Davis)” as well as double Grammy Award-winning musician Rob Fusari’s “Don’t Let Love Down”. In 2017, he directed Peppermint’s “Civil War”. In 2018, he directed Randy Jones' music video for the single “Hard Times”.[4]
In 2018, Torich’s video art installation “Cloudface” exhibited at the ITS LIQUID International Art and Architecture Festival in conjunction with Venice Biennale of Architecture.[5] That same year he photographed Lady Bunny at Wigstock for HBO's Wig.[6]
