He is Editor-in-Chief of Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, Visiting Scholar and Mentor at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University, and a former Vice Chair of Clinical Pathology and Quality at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.[1][2]

Early life and education

Tanasijevic was born in Skopje, North Macedonia. He earned his MD from Saints Cyril and Methodius University in 1987, completed a residency in Clinical Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1990 to 1993, and joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School in 1993. He later earned an MBA from Boston University’s Questrom School of Management in 2004 and a Certificate in Entrepreneurship from Harvard Business School Online in 2023.[3]

Career

Academic and hospital roles

At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Tanasijevic served as Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry (1993–2002), Director of Clinical Laboratories (2002–2020), and Vice Chair of Clinical Pathology and Quality (2002–2022).[4] He was also Director of Clinical Laboratories at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute from 1999 to 2016, and held the rank of Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School.[5]

He has been quoted in trade press on laboratory operations and process redesign, including in *CAP Today* regarding changes in outpatient phlebotomy at Brigham and Dana-Farber.[6]

Research and innovation

Tanasijevic co-authored a multicenter study in the New England Journal of Medicine that evaluated cardiac-specific troponin I for risk stratification in acute coronary syndromes.[7]

His group also reported a slide-based, image-analysis approach to the complete blood count; the work was covered in trade press.[8][9]

He is listed as co-inventor on several U.S. patents related to diagnostic technologies.[10] Technology from his startup Cell Imaging Systems was later associated with Constitution Medical Investors, which Roche acquired in 2013 for US$220 million up front.[11][12][13]
