Minakshi Mukherjee (Bengali: মিনাক্ষী মুখার্জী, born 26 April 1984) is an Indian politician from West Bengal. She is the state president of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the young wing of CPIM.[1] She has been fielded as Left Front candidate from Sanjukta Morcha against Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee and BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari in 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election from Nandigram, but lost to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari.[2][3][4]

Early life

Minakshi was born on 26 April 1984 in Kulti, West Bengal. She completed schooling at Jaladhi Kumari Devi Uchcha Balika Vidyalaya in Kulti.[5] Her graduation was from Banwarilal Bhalotia College Asansol and she later completed a Masters in Political Science from Burdwan University.[1][6][7]

Political career

Minakshi Mukherjee started her activism through Students' Federation of India in her college days.[8][9] She was later inducted into the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) local committee in 2008.[1][6] A firebrand leader and good orator, she rose fast within the DYFI circles, and by 2018, she became the state president of DYFI in West Bengal.[7][1][10] In the same year, she was co-opted to the state committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in West Bengal.[1] She braved the police brutality in the march to Nabanna from College Street on 11 February 2021.[11] She questioned Mamata Banerjee's government for not providing adequate education and employment for the Youth in West Bengal.[11] In the 12-hour bandh called against the police brutality against Nabanna protestors, she rose to fame for her militant leadership.[12][13]

In 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election, the CPI(M)'s Minakshi Mukherjee contested in the high-profile constituency Nandigram,[14] against the Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee (the West Bengal Chief Minister) and the BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari.[15][16][17] Minakshi represented the Left-Congress-ISF alliance(Sanyukta Morcha) in Vidhan Sabha election.[18][17][19] However, she could not win the election.
