Mindlag Project is a French metal band created in 1999 by the Martinez brothers—Manu and Julien—in Vitrolles, near Marseilles.[1]
They have released four albums so far: Karybda (2002),[2] Skylla (2004),[3] De Charybde en Scylla... (2006)[4] and Mindlag Project (2009).[5]
The band is currently signed to the label M Office records,[6] a subsidiary of Pervade Productions. They have diverse influences, mainly thrash metal, groove metal, heavy metal, hardcore punk, and to a lesser extent death metal, doom metal, progressive metal and rock.[citation needed]
History
The band was born from the ashes of a former formation called Scarecrew, founded in 1995, which played music influenced by thrash and heavy metal.[7] In 1999, Mindlag Project was created. It was originally a side-project of the members of Scarecrew, and eventually became their priority.[8]
It was originally composed of Manu Martinez (guitar), Julien Martinez (drums), Richard Mariette (bass) and Nicolas "Nemo" Molina (vocals). But quickly the line-up changed, and Mathieu Melero took the place of singer in the band. In 2001, the band recruited Vincent Gross to ensure the second guitar, and Gilles Gautier as a bassist.[9]
In 2009, after the recording of their first LP, Romain Dallier, who had recorded the cello on it, joined the band as a full-time member.[10]
In May 2009, Vincent Gross left the band and was replaced by Sylvain Cantrel (ex-Generis).[11]
The band released its first EP called Karybda in 2002, self-produced and recorded in studios. All productions were by Christian Carvin (who has also recorded bands like Eths and The more I see (the metal band of Graham 'Gizz' Butt from the Prodigy)...)[12] Karybda was distributed through Musicast from 2003.[13]
Mindlag Project honed their skills on stage, and soon the association Hybride was created, in order to organize metal concerts in their country, and to promote the French metal scene. During several years, they organized two festivals a year—the Hybride Festival and the Open Festiva—and programmed the most famous French metal bands[14] At these occasions, the band shared the stage with Gojira, Eths, Hed PE, Dagoba, Hacride, Aqme, and Tagada Jones, among others.[15][16]
In 2004, the band returned to the studio with Christian Carvin to record Skylla, a follow-up to Karybda, referring to the proverb "to fall between Scylla and Charybdis".[17] The band achieved its goal and was signed by the label Customcore Records.[18] The album was originally distributed in France through Overcome Records[19] and in North America through Great White North Records.[20] These companies have since ceased operations, and it is now distributed in the US and Asia through Good Life.[18]
In 2006, Mindlag Project decided to record De Charybde en Scylla..., an EP, in order to make a transition, mostly in their concept, between their "dyad" and their first LP.[21] After the release of the EP, the band started to record their first full-length LP. They entrusted the string arrangements to Romain Dallier, who is now a full-time member of the band.
The band's self-titled album was released in March 2009 on the label Pervade Productions[22] and is physically distributed through Socadisc in Europe.[23] It is also digitally distributed through Believe Digital.[24]
After a French tour as headliners in October 2009,[25] the band participated in their first European tour with Six Feet Under and Illdisposed in May 2010.[26][27]
The band has appeared in some Streetcult compilations in the US with bands such as Fear Factory, Skinlab, Otep, Leaves' Eyes, Tristania, Snot, Anti-Flag,[28] and on French metal compilations in France, with bands like Samael or Punish Yourself.[29][30]
Concept
Jon De Grimpclat
The band evolves in a very conceptual universe, regulated by the adventures of Jon De Grimpclat, the dark hero from all their albums. Jon is a dandy, a dead languages professor, engaged in morbid extra-curricular activities, as he is a serial killer. However, he acts with a certain ethics, in the name of justice, at least, his justice... He had a tragic childhood, losing his mother at the age of eight, finding her dead downstairs in the family mansion. His father, who remarried too soon and neglected him because of his work (he is a fighter pilot); and his mother-in-law, with whom he had a bad relationship; did not realize that his other children jeered at him, because he doesn't talk much, and is exuberant.[31][32][33][34][35][36]
Psychologic approach
Jon's mind autopsy allows the band to use an empirical method to base their topics on, which consists of perpetuating a certain vision of "beautiful things" (in an artistic way), by using a strange aesthetic.[33]
The band believes that the perception of beauty in our Western society has become perverted by certain castrating ethics that constantly associate the concept of beauty with the one of goodness. But, in their opinion, beauty cannot be confined to a simple moral value. The attempt to make crime beautiful, or at least, to provoke in this domain, is a real leitmotiv for the band, which tries to show that even a bad thing can be considered beautiful.[37][38]
This vision has been inspired, among others, by the work of Charles Baudelaire; who is a huge influence for the band. The band has even quoted a poem of his, "L’hymne à la beauté" (Les fleurs du mal) in their song "De Charybde en Scylla".[39][40]
Greek mythology
Since their beginnings, the band refers to several mythology, but mainly Greek Mythology. This is partly explained by the fact that it is related to the profession of Jon De Grimpclat, but also because Polytheist civilization cosmogony is very symbolic. The fact of using ancestral symbols allows them to deeply touch human beings, and it's a way for the band to gain access to a kind of universality.[41]
