Mindustry is a 2017 tower defense/factory building video game with sandbox and real-time strategy elements. Mindustry was developed by Anuken originally as a small project for the GDL Metal Monstrosity Jam.

Overview[edit]

In Mindustry, you control a small ship that defends a structure called the Core, your job is to build production lines and defenses to survive, maintain and conquer. There are a total of eight different categories of structures to build, varying from drills and factories to extract and refine resources, to turrets and walls to defend your assets. There are many more buildings that help to take back Serpulo and other planets. the two current planets are; Serpulo and Erikir, Serpulo is the home planet of your faction; the Sharded, brought to defend the planet from the formidable enemy; the Crux. The second planet of Erikir has a far different and far more deadly enemy of Malis, and their strategies reflect such.

Story[edit]

-the storyline spans both Mindustry classic and the current version (V7(subject to change).

from the beginning Mindustry classic, the Sharded are set to defend Serpulo from the Crux. In their current state they are quite primitive, only sending NPC units that range from kamikaze units to gatling units. the Sharded is also rather limited due to the original set of blocks being much smaller compared to modern Mindustry, the construction vehicle especially, originally being grounded rather than an airship. This game doesn't exactly have an end, instead having you survive for as long as you can with any strategy you can conjure on any of the built-in maps.

After Mindustry classic is the modern game of Mindustry, and the entire planet of Serpulo has witnessed a horrible event known as the seeding. A sector by the name of biomass synthesis facility originally synthesized spores for use in fuel and plastics, and after a significant attack and the destruction of the facilitators the spores began to spread violently and cover the vast majority of Serpulo, and anywhere the spores missed, the snow reigns. Although the planet seems like its unrecoverable, the Sharded will never go down without a good fight even if they lost everything. The only reasonable spot to regain control from was a sector named Ground zero with quite literally nothing outside of a drill and a few belts. However the first is always the easiest, and after about 4-5 hours of gameplay the Sharded will be able to take on the enemy head on, in the planetary launch terminal. Originally after capturing planetary launch terminal the game would end, as it was linear rather than open-ended as it is now.

In more recent times a new planet has been discovered by the name of Erikir and it is much less forgiving than Serpulo. Erikir is an arid planet with next to no organic life present, but it is suggested that it was a luscious green planet like Serpulo, what happened we may never know. This planet has a much more powerful enemy, that being the Malis and they are much more formidable than the Crux and will easily overturn your presence if you are not careful. Erikir has different tech than Serpulo, meaning the Sharded would have to understand something that is ironically alien to them, to put it in perspective the basic drill mines resources inside of walls instead of from the ground, and it requires power while taking more of the basic resource to build. Since the tech is wildly different, the units reflect that primarily with tanks, the beefiest and by far most powerful units, but construction works differently as well, as instead of having tier 4 and 5 buildings there are assembly buildings that build the units in the open air.

Fittingly, the planet starts with a sector named The onset as an introduction to this incredibly different experience, and it is the easiest as its the first, but there is a better chance of losing. Instead of branching off into numbered sectors Erikir follows a much more rigid campaign, rarely deviating from the main path to do something akin to a side-quest even when you're given multiple options, because you will always have to get back on the main path (lake, split, and peaks all fall under this category as they don't lead to anything). The final sector is named Origin implying that this is literally the origin of the Malis. Once origin is captured Erikir is over, there is nothing else to do as there are no numbered sectors (as of V7, come V8 there will be more content as well as another enemy that is a cancerous growth of neoplasm).

Gameplay[edit]

starting from a bare building list you are to build a production line and defend it, you have access to the mechanical drill and conveyer both of which are essential to the games structure and progression. the aforementioned core is the weakest out of all 6 planetary cores, however it is the heart of any base, after it is destroyed you lose the sector, if it is an enemy core they are erased from the sector. the basic core is named 'Core: Shard'.

Cores[edit]

'The core is the heart of the base, once destroyed the sector is lost'.

The core acts as the hub for each sector or level, if the enemy manages to destroy the core, you lose the sector or level. unlike Factorio, you do not need to manufacture buildings to place them in he world, instead recourses that are sent to the core are accessible to build structures within the environment, however building time takes the place of needing to manufarucre the buildings, with some taking upwards of 100 seconds to construct. this can be shortened by using units that have a building property, as they will aid in the building speed.

the shard core uses the same design of the Mindustry classic core, unlike Mindustry classic you can upgrade the core.

Each upgrade adds;

  • higher storage capacity.
  • more active units of each type (+8 per upgrade).
  • an improved construction vehicle.

The foundation core is considered a early-game core, since you unlock it by obtaining silicon and there is no set location where you are told to unlock it. it unlocks the beta vehicle, the beta has; more hit-points, improved weapons, improved mining speed and improved building speed.
