The minimalist phone app is a custom home screen for Android phones that replaces the default home screen. It was originally launched by a Slovak programmer, Martin Morávek, in 2020.[1] The app was a result of overusing social media during the pandemic COVID-19. Initially, it was programmed to prevent FOMO and to solve mental health issues caused by excessive use of mobile devices, but later on, people found it as a solution for concentration. This app has evolved into a minimalistic technology that makes people more productive as they are not distracted by notifications.
It has users all over the world, and it has been installed more than 250,000 times. People can install it for free on Google Play and reduce their screen time.[2] This app offers a lot of features, e.g. users can block several social media apps at once, rename apps, or opt to see content in monochrome (black and white) mode. Users can also hide their most tempting apps deep in a submenu. There is also an optional in-app usage timer. When it is enabled, users get reminded after the time they have decided to spend in an addictive app has passed. In-app time reminder is aiming to help people not to spend too much time in an app with endless scroll feed.[3] It is a feature that can help people to increase productivity.[4]
The app is available for Android, and it is completely ad-free. Also, there is no other third party provider.[5] Up until 2022, the app has been translated into five languages (German, English, French, Chinese, and Spanish).
According to the survey conducted by the minimalist phone, 93% of users reported spending less screen time on their phones after three days of using the minimalist phone. This statement was mentioned by Martin Morávek in Forbes Slovakia.[6]
