Miss Vanuatu is the biggest national beauty pageant for women in Vanuatu.
History
Miss Vanuatu was founded for the first time in 1978. The pageant is driven by Vanuatu Tourism Office in Port Vila. The Miss Vanuatu pageant aims to recognize and promote the attributes, intelligence, and talents of young Ni-Vanuatu women.
Missions
The Miss Vanuatu Organization added two important missions into the local pageant to promote Vanuatu Tourism to the world:
- To develop an equal opportunity for the Ni-Vanuatu young woman using their God-given talents in taking the lead to promote their pride for ‘Vanuatu’, promoting within any regional and international brain and beauty pageant events, as part of the destination marketing awareness for the world to further ‘discover what matters’.
- To recognize and promote the attributed; intelligence, and talents of Ni-Vanuatu women for their contribution in the development of Vanuatu.
- To make a Ni-Vanuatu woman become an ambassador for Vanuatu; locally, regionally & internationally.[1]
International franchises
- In 1978, Vanuatu began to participate at the Most Prestigious International beauty pageant, Miss Universe 1978 in Acapulco, Mexico. The reigning Miss Vanuatu 1978 was Christine Spooner. In that year, Vanuatu competed as Miss New Hebrides. The New Hebrides was the colonial name for an island group in the South Pacific that now forms the nation of Vanuatu. In 1978, the first and the last Miss Vanuatu competed at the Miss Universe pageant.[2]
- In 2013, Miss Vanuatu participated at Miss Asia Pacific World 2013 in Seoul, South Korea[3] and Miss South Pacific 2013 in Honiara, Solomon Islands.[4]
Pageant notes
- In 2013, for the second time, Miss Vanuatu was launched to be held, after 1978 as New Hebrides. Nowadays, Miss Vanuatu will be focusing on Tourism.
- In 2014, for the first time, Miss Vanuatu has been postponed by the official organization. For this reason, the Miss Vanuatu Committee recently took the decision to put a hold on the national beauty contest. Based on the committee’s decision, the reigning Miss Vanuatu, Ms. Valerie Martinez, will continue to maintain the title until the next competition.[5]
Titleholders
The winner of Miss Vanuatu represents her country at Miss Asia Pacific World pageant. On occasion, when the winner does not qualify (due to age) for either contest, a runner-up is sent.
