Valerie James "Missy" Owens (born September 25, 1976) is an American political strategist, attorney, and business executive. She is a niece of U.S. President-elect Joe Biden.[citation needed]

Owens worked in the Obama administration as Deputy Chief of Staff for Secretary of Energy Steven Chu.[1]She currently serves as Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations at The Coca-Cola Company.[2]

Life and career[edit]

She was born one of three children to Valerie Biden Owens and Jack Owens. Her father is an attorney and her mother is also a political strategist. Owens has a sister, Casey Owens Castello, and a brother, Cuffe Owens, an attorney.

Owens graduated from Georgetown University with a B.A. in Political Science and from Brooklyn Law School in 2004. Prior to taking the bar exam she worked in numerous political offices gaining political experience. She worked on John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign. [3]

In 1998, Owens joined Rudy Giuliani's legislative affairs team. In 2000, she served as an aide to White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart. In 2011, she worked in the U.S. Department of Commerce as Chief of Staff to Deputy Secretary Rebecca Blank. [4]

Owens was campaign manager for her cousin, Beau Biden's winning campaign for Attorney General of Delaware in 2006.[5][better source needed] She has also played a role in her uncle's political campaigns, including as Political Operations Manager for his 2008 presidential campaign.[6]

She previously worked at Harbour Group as an accounts executive and practiced law at Greenberg Traurig, LLP.[7]Owens was a featured speaker at the Greenberg Traurig Women’s Business Forum in 2016. [8]

Owens is involved with the Women's Foreign Policy Group, which aims to enhance women leadership in international affairs. [9]

Owens is Vice-Chairwoman on the Board of Directors of FourBlock, an organization dedicated to helping Army veterans find career success after service.[10]
