Mitch Guthrie Jr. (born November 20, 1996) is American off-road racing driver. He is currently part of Red Bull's rallying team for rally raid events and competes in the World Rally-Raid Championship.[2]
Career[edit]
Mitch grew up in Glendora, California and began SSV racing in 2008 at the age 12, in the Championship Off-Road Racing and Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series.[2]
In 2012, he moved on to the World Off Road Championship Series, securing multitude of podiums and wins in a 4-season span, driving Polaris RZRs. In 2015, he won the WORCS Unlimited Series.[2]
In 2016, Guthrie moved on to the Best in the Desert series, racking up 4 top five finishes. He also won the 2016 UTV World Championship. In 2017, Guthrie won the Mint 400 and the Baja 1000 races in the UTV class, along with 2 other wins.[2][3]
In 2018, Guthrie won the King of the Hammers race in the UTV class, standing atop the podium alongside his father, an ex-champion of the race. In 2019, Guthrie won the King of the Hammers for the 2nd time, becoming the first back-to-back champion of the race since his father.[2][4]
In 2020, Guthrie began competing internationally, joining Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA for his debut in the 2020 edition of the Dakar Rally, where he competed in the SXS/UTV open class in an Overdrive OT3, with experienced navigator Ola Fløene as his co-driver.[5] He won his first stage on stage 4 of the rally, before dropping out of overall contention due to an engine failure. Rejoining in the Dakar Experience category, he won 2 further stages - stages 8 & 10 - to bring his tally of stage wins to 3 for the rally.[3]
In 2021, Guthrie's Dakar Rally began in an ignominious fashion, as he lost over 4 hours due to punctures in stage 1 itself, before being forced out due to an engine oil pressure issue.[3] His attempts to rebound at the next year's event were curtailed due to illness.[6]
In 2023, Guthrie returned to Dakar Rally with a new T3 class vehicle - the MCE-5 Development T3M and a new co-driver - Kellon Walch. He began the rally in a charging fashion, winning stage 2 & stage 4 to take the lead in the general classifications in the T3 class. However, he lost over 8 hours in stage 5, ending his shot at the overall victory.[7] Guthrie then proceeded to 3 further stages in the rally - stages 7,12 & 13 - taking his final tally of stage wins of the rally to 5. [8][9][10] Besides the Dakar, Guthrie is contesting the complete 2023 World Rally-Raid Championship, winning at the 2023 Sonora Rally.[11]
