Modern Muskokan Poet is singer-songwriter Hayden McNulty's debut studio album, released in March 2019.

Background[edit]

McNulty was one of the most popular parody artists on YouTube throughout 2016 & 2017 with his hugely successful "MineCraft Awesome Parodys" channel, where he took popular songs and rewrote the lyrics to a MineCraft theme. This channel has gained over 70 million views and over 620,000 subscribers.[1] McNulty's parody of "Take On Me" by A-ha, called "Mine Diamonds", was one of the most popular internet memes of 2017.[2]

After uploading what seems to be McNulty's last parody, "I Mined It", a parody of "I Love It" by Kanye West & Lil Pump, the channel was inactive. On March 23rd, he uploaded "I MADE NEW MUSIC (ANNOUNCEMENT)", a promotion video for Modern Muskokan Poet, which was released the following day.[3][4]

Composition[edit]

"The Queen Is Dead" was written on January 1, 2019, and was the first song fully written and completed for the album.[5]

McNulty has stated that the track "Honolulu Scented Hand Soap" was written about "this hand sanitizer...called honolulu sun [sic]yo...and it reminded me of summer and a camp i [sic] went to earlier in the year. i [sic] wrote this song about that camp and the feeling of summer and wishing i [sic] could be like "living in the memories" if that doesn't sound too 13-year-old ish."[6] McNulty also revealed that the track was written immediately after writing the title track, "Modern Muskokan Poet".[6]

In a YouTube video entitled "qna", he reveals that 7 tracks on Modern Muskokan Poet were written or inspired by his MineCraft Awesome Parodys channel and experiences, those tracks being "Modern Muskokan Poet", "Gone", "Autumn In Solitary", "Six Months Later", "Nice Ring", "Sick Drain Pipe", and "Without Me".[7]

In July 2019, McNulty uploaded a music video for "The Queen Is Dead", filmed, edited, and produced by McNulty.[8]

The title of McNulty's song "Headhunted (2018/08/06)", which appears on his follow-up album High School Film Festival, directly references the date of when he had a conversation with an unnamed friend that inspired him to write some new original songs.[9] This conversation eventually lead into the recording and release of Modern Muskokan Poet.

Recording[edit]

The recording of this album took place in February-March 2019, with available demos of "The Queen Is Dead" and "Modern Muskokan Poet" dating back to February 15th.[10] All recording was done in his bedroom studio.

However, Modern Muskokan Poet was not a successful critically, rewarded with a 2.3/5 average rating on reviewing website "rateyourmusic.com".[11] On McNulty's bandcamp, reviewer Asher McChesney praised the track "Honolulu Scented Hand Soap", saying "This piece is very well written and I really enjoy the style. It is very good in my opinion as is the whole album."[12]
