Modern Retail is an online media outlet published by Digiday Media. Digiday was founded in 2008.[1] by Nick Friese. While Digiday's coverage focuses on the media business[2], Modern Retail covers "the ins and outs of the reinvention of the retail industry," with a focus on direct-to-consumer (DTC) businesses[3] and coverage of Amazon's impact on retail.
It was launched in 2019 as Digiday's third media brand[4][5][6] and has been led by Editor-in-Chief Cale Weissman since April 2020[7]. Modern Retail's sibling publications are Glossy, which first launched in 2016[8], and WorkLife[9].
At launch, the publication was led by Hilary Milnes and one additional reporter[10]. By 2023 the staff had grown to six reporters[11]
In 2021, Modern Retail began publishing weekly newsletters entitled "DTC Briefing" and "Amazon Briefing"[12].
Modern Retail's coverage of leading retail brands has been cited in many major news outlets[13][14][15][16][17][18]. Its editor-in-chief has also been quoted in the New York Times for expert analysis[19]
In addition to publishing business news, Modern Retail hosts industry events[20] and award programs[21]. They publish in Japan under the Digiday umbrella.
