Mohamed Mahomoud Abd Al-Wahhab (Arabic: محمد محمود عبد الوهاب; born 3 October 1979) [1] is an Egyptian competitive programming coach. He started participating in ICPC ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest as a contestant in ANARC (the old name of ACPC Arabian Collegiate Programming Contest) in 2000. Since then, he has played many roles (Contestant, Coach, Contest Manager, Judge and Problem Setter [2]). 25 of them were ranked in the top five. 20 of his teams qualified to the [World Finals].

Early life[edit]

He was born in Cairo. His father is Mahmoud Abd Al-Wahhab was the Head of Electricity and Communication Department at Arab Contractors and his mother is Hala Al-Marakbi was a teacher. He has a rare disability called Spinal muscular atrophy type 2 [3].

Education and positions[edit]

He studied at Misr Language School. He started learning programming at his third year of primary school. At first, he started with Logo (programming language) and BASIC , and then he continued in learning BASIC by reading books of it. Then, he read many programming books about dBase, Forte and Pascal (programming language) . After preparatory school, he switched from Egyptian learning system to IGCSE International General Certificate of Secondary Education. Later, He got a Bachelor’s degree (ranked at the third place) in Computer science Department from the Faculty of computers and information – Cairo University (2001) and finished MSc Master of Science in Computer Science Department from Faculty of computers and information – Cairo University (2010). Currently, he is a PhD Doctor of Philosophy student at Charles Darwins in Australia. He works as a teacher assistant at Faculty of computers and information – Cairo University, the Regional Informatics Center at Arab Academy for Science Technology and Maritime Transport, – Abo Keer Campus. He worked as a teacher assistant at the American University of Cairo AUC (2011 to 2017). [4]

Competitive programming achievements[edit]

He participated in the ACPC 3 times; he won the first place in 2001 and qualified to the ICPC and he got the 4th place 2 times in 2000 and 2002.[6]

20 of his teams qualified to the [World Finals]; thirteen times as a coach Prague 2004, Texas 2006, Banff 2008, Harbin 2010, Orlando 2011, Warsaw 2012, 3 teams in Saint Petersburg 2013, Ekaterinburg 2014, 4 teams in Marrakech 2015, 2 teams in Phuket 2016 and 4 teams in South Dakota 2017. He was involved in the training of teams that participated in the last 10 ANARCs (2000–2009) and 7 ACPCs (2010–2016) that contained about 127 different contestants that participated 75 times; 20 of his teams qualified to the [World Finals]. 25 of them were ranked in the top five, 13 of them were ranked 6–9 and 14 from 10–20. His teams got the 1st place 7 times, the 2nd place 6 times, the 3rd place four times, 4th place three times, 5th place three times, 6th place four times, the 7th place once, 8th place 5 times and 9th place three times.[7]

He is one of the main partners and founders of Coach Academy in [Cairo] and is heading the training team in the Academy [8].


Awards and Interviews[edit]

He is the only coach in the Arab region who achieved such records.IBM and ICPC honored him with a 'Coach Award' [9] in May 2012 at the ICPC [World Finals]. As this award is given to coaches that have brought teams to the World Finals five times or more.

He appeared in many interviews.
