Mohamed Wisham (Dhivehi: ޑރ.މުހައްމަދު ވިޝާމް) is a Maldivian medical doctor, former producer journalist in Television Maldives, and the advisor to Ministry of Law and Gender (Maldives). He contributed to reform the national plan on mental health, disability & gender based violence in the Maldives.[1]
Ministry of Health & WHO
He was part of the public health campaign to create awareness on medical issues & public health emergencies with focus on Mental Health in Maldives water crisis & the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives.[2][3][4][5] He led the disability and mental health assessment initiative from the President Office of the Maldives in Laamu Atoll to identify the setbacks in the Maldives health care system in Mental Health and delivering medical care for the disabled.[6]
Dr. Wisham served as a World Health Organization (WHO) focal point for Dengue, Malaria, Filaria in the Department of Public health (DPH) of Ministry of Health, worked with the former Director General of Department of public health, late Mr. Ibrahim Shaheem in creating and implementing guidelines on the management of communicable diseases in the Maldives. Maldives was certified Malaria free by WHO in 2016.[7]
Elected Roles
He was elected to the Executive Committee of Maldivian Medical Association in 2014, and was elected to the Board of the first Non-profit organization in the Maldives, Care Society in 2015. Dr. Wisham was a founding member of Faalan NGO along with the Former Attorney General & Legal Affair Minister Azima Shukoor and Minister of Gender, Family and Social Security, Shidhatha Shareef.[8]
Clinical Practice
Dr. Wisham was the initial doctor who attended to the Parliament member, and then vice president of ruling party Alhan Fahmy after he was stabbed on 1 February 2014, in ADK Hospital. Alhan Fahmy survived the assassination attempt, but sustained major injuries to his spine.[9][10]
