Mohammad Jakir Hosen is a Bangladeshi scientist, geneticist, biotechnologist and professor of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in the School of Life Sciences, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Early life and education[edit]

Born in Dhamrai, Hosen was raised in several cities in Bangladesh, including Dhaka, Manikganj, and Khulna. He attended Khulna University where he earned a Bachelor's degree (Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, 2002). He then joined a pharmaceutical company in Cumilla as a Quality Assurance Officer, where he worked until December, 2004.

He went back to Khulna to start his graduate studies and ad started a Master's studies in Biotechnology at Khulna University[1]. During this time, he worked as a Lecturer at the Department of Genetics, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. However, in 2008, he left Khulna University for Belgium, leaving his Master's program incomplete. In Belgium, he completed an MSc in Nematology with Erasmus Mundus scholarship from Ghent University, and received Great Distinction award. Hosen then joined the Center for Medical Genetics, Ghent University Hospital, where he pursued his Ph.D. in Medical Genetics in 2014[2]. During his tenure at Ghent, Hosen's work with Prof. Olivier Vanakker, MD, PhD and Prof. Anne De Paepe, MD, PhD led to a significant understanding of the pathomechanism of pseudoxanthoma elasticum, a rare genetic disease that causes ectopic mineralization of elastic fibers in some specific tissues.[3]

Career[edit]

Hosen stayed in the same office at the Ghent University Hospital until 2015 as a post-doctoral research associate.[4] In Fall 2015, he turned back to Bangladesh and rejoined Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as an associate professor in the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.[4][5] There, he established his own research laboratory to study the role of genetic and environmental factors behind human diseases.[6] Hosen and his lab collaborate with several other in-house, national, and international groups to illustrate and understand the genetic, molecular, and physiological factors responsible for rare and common genetic disorders present in Bangladesh. A foundation work conducted by his research group deciphered the genetic and reproductive burden of consanguineous marriages in Bangladeshi population [7]. He also studies some infectious diseases' public health and epidemiological backgrounds, including chikungunya, dengue, and COVID-19.[8][9][10] His lab facilitates a semi-automated zebra fish facility for toxicological assessment of heavy metals during early embryonic development.[4]
