Mohammad Khan Azarian (Persian: محمدخان آذریان; born July 7, 1950, Zabol, Iran) is an Iranian American mathematician and a professor of mathematics at the University of Evansville, Indiana, who specializes in infinite group theory. Azarian also works in other areas of mathematics including combinatorics, number theory, differential equations, and Jamshid al-Kashi [Kashani]'s mathematical treatises.

Early life and education[edit]

Azarian was born on July 7, 1950, in Zabol, Iran. When he was eight years old, his family moved to the Gonbad-e Kavus area and settled in Kalaleh. He went to elementary school in Zabol and Kalaleh. He attended 7th through 10th grade in Gonbad-e Kavus, and finished his last two years of high school in Mashhad. Azarian earned a B.Sc. in mathematics from Tabriz University, Iran, in 1973.

Azarian came to the US in 1976 to pursue his graduate education. He obtained his M.Sc. in mathematics (Thesis: A Study of the Mathematical Models of a Two Species Ecosystem) from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, 1979. Azarian completed his Ph.D. in mathematics (Dissertation: Near Frattini Subgroups of Amalgamated Free Products of Groups) from Saint Louis University, 1985.

Career[edit]

After graduating from Tabriz University, Azarian fulfilled his military obligations, and then worked for two years as a consulting mathematician in Tehran, Iran. While he was pursuing his Ph.D., he was a teaching assistant at Saint Louis University and an adjunct faculty at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis. Since August 1985, he has been at the University of Evansville, where he is currently a professor of mathematics.

Personal life[edit]

Azarian was born to Zaman and Golbebe Azarian. In 1985, he married Helen (Dziadyk) Azarian, and they have a daughter, Sara Marjan, and a son, Camran Zaman.
