Rashad Selim (1913-1941). His full name is Mohammad Rashad Mohammad Selim Abdul Kader Al-Khalidi Al-Mouselli. He is an Iraqi artist[1] and the son of Haj Mohammad Selim whose family was famous for arts, painting and culture.[2][3]
Life
Rashad was born in Ankara, Turkey. He returned with his parents to Iraq in the year 1927[4] and lived with his family at Al-Fadil street in Baghdad. His father, Haj Mohammad Selim, was a military officer and one of the pioneers and founders of the Iraqi art movement[5][6][7]. His mother, Maleeka Abdallah was renowned for the art of embroidery and weaving[3].

Rashad Selim
He is the oldest brother in the Selim family which was famous for culture and arts[3]. His brothers are: Ali Suad Selim, Ahmad Jawad Selim and Mustafa Nizar Selim[8] and his sister is Fatima Naziha Selim[7]. His brother Nizar named his son Rashad as a tribute to him.
Biography
Rashad Selim loved Theater, Acting, Art, Music[7] and Horse Riding in addition to his innate talent in oil and watercolors painting. He worked as a military officer and was married to Mukarram Bahia Abdul Kader Sirri Al-Husseini, from Syrian origin. He lived in Baghdad and had his son Mahmoud Riad Rashad in 1938 and his daughter Nidal Rashad in 1941. He visited Syria many times during his marriage.
His brother Jawad Selim was in touch with him regularly during his studies of sculpture in France between the years 1938 and 1939 (see postcard image below).

Artwork
He was very close to his parents and acquired the love for culture and arts from them. He learned from his father, Haj Mohammad Selim, the principles of drawing and painting[2][1]. What is left from his artwork include a number of sketch drawings and watercolor paintings in which he drew still life and portraits (samples of his artworks below).

Death
He passed away at a young age after falling from his horse[3]. He was buried in Al-Khayzaran Cemetery. His wife Mukarram returned to Syria with her two children Mahmoud Riad and Nidal and lived there with her family until her passing.
