Mohd Ma’Sum Billah is a Malaysian author and researcher of Islamic finance currently working as a Professor at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia.

Education and career[edit]

Billah earned an LLB from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and went on to obtain an MCL and PhD from the same institution.[1] In 1999, he joined the Kulliyah of Economics and Management Sciences at IIUM as an Assistant Professor, later qualifying as Professor by 2004.[1] He has also served as Adjunct Professor of Finance at the Centre for Islamic Thought and Education in the University of South Australia.[1] Since 2014, Billah has been a Professor at the Islamic Economics Institute of King Abdulaziz University.[2][3]

Research[edit]

In his research, Billah focuses on the areas of Islamic finance, insurance, investment and capital market, having published 26 books on the field.[4][5][6] A common theme in his work is the reconciliation of Islamic principles with the modern financial industry, and the socio-economic impact of Islamic banking and finance.[7][8] For example, he argues against the commonly-held view that life insurance is Haram, contending that it falls in line with the Islamic view that one should safeguard their family's welfare against future risk.[9] Billah believes that rapidly developing FinTech can operate within an Islamic context following Sharia rules and regulations, to which end he has written guides on a Halal model of cryptocurrency management and the use of credit cards.[10][11][12]
