Gray is from Newbury, Vermont.[1] Her father, Bob Gray, competed in the 1968 Winter Olympics and 1972 Winter Olympics as a cross-country skier. Her uncle, William B. Gray, was a United States Attorney.[2] Bob and Kim Gray raised Molly and her two siblings on a 225-acre (91 ha) farm.[1]

Gray attended the University of Vermont, and competed for the Vermont Catamounts in cross-country skiing.[3] She graduated from the University of Vermont in 2006.[4] Gray served as an intern for Patrick Leahy's office in Vermont and then worked on Peter Welch's 2006 campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.[2] She worked in Welch's office after he was elected.[4] She stayed in Washington D.C. to work for the International Committee of the Red Cross, and then moved back to Vermont to enroll at Vermont Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor in 2014. After law school, Gray clerked for Peter W. Hall of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Afterwards, she enrolled at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, where she earned a Master of Laws in International Law. She passed the bar exam in Vermont in February 2017, and worked for the International Code of Conduct for Private Security Service Providers. In August 2018, she became an assistant attorney general in Vermont's criminal division.[5]

In the 2020 Vermont elections, Gray opted to run for lieutenant governor.[5] Gray defeated Tim Ashe and Debbie Ingram in the Democratic Party primary election on August 11 and will face Scott Milne in the November 3 general election.[6]
