David Friend is a Boston-based businessman, lecturer, author, and philanthropist. He currently serves as the CEO of Wasabi Technologies.[1][2]

History[edit]

David graduated with a bachelor's degree in engineering from Yale University.[3] in 1969 he co-founded ARP Instruments with Alan R. Pearlman, one of the early leading American synthesizer manufacturers[4]. he was insturmental in the design of the ARP Odyssey and ARP Omni; having invented one of the first pressure-sensitive controllers ever used on a musical instrument[5][6].

After Arp, Friend embarked on a series of ventures including the founding of Carbonite, Inc.. As CEO, Friend generated controversy during the Rush Limbaugh–Sandra Fluke controversy when as CEO unilaterally decided to remove ads from Rush Limbaugh's radio program.[7] In 2013, his fight with a patent troll company was documented in a two part This American Life Episode "When Patents Attack". [8]

Philanthropy[edit]

As an avid mineral and gem collector, he donated the David Friend Hall of Gems and Minerals to the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.[3]

David served on the board of Berklee College of Music where there is a concert hall named in his honor.[9][10] He is currently chairman of the board of Boston Baroque[10], an orchestra and chorus that has received seven Grammy nominations.
