MomentCam (Chinese: 魔漫相机; pinyin: mó màn xiàngjī) is a mobile app developed by China-based Hightalk Software Corp.[4] that was launched in 2013 for Android and iOS.[5] It allows users to create and share customized caricatures and emoticons that can be shared across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, QQ, Weibo, WeChat, WhatsApp and others.[5]

The photo-taking and editing app comes with a range of customizable options to transform a photo of a user into a comic character. It uses advanced facial recognition to plant a user's face into a caricature or emoticon and with various abilities like choosing a hairstyle and adjusting the face shape.[6]

As of November 2015, the app had been downloaded over 300 million times and had over 20 million monthly active users. Its highest new user activation in a single day was 3.25 million.[7]

    History[edit]

    Launch[edit]

The Chinese language version first launched on Android in August 2013 and MomentCam and accumulated 20 million Android users within 70 days. Launching on iOS on October 22 of the same year, new users averaged 2–3 million per day.[5] According to rankings from AppsFire and App Annie, on October 31 it ranked #1 in the Chinese App Store, #2 in Australia and # 6 in the US. It also ranked #1 in Photo & Video apps in those same countries.[8]

The following month, the English language version was launched for both the iOS and Android platforms.[9] In February 2014, MomentCam released a major update adding GIF creation functionality to the app. Users were able to make GIFs or 'Emoticons' as the app calls them of their own face. Users could choose from 144 animated GIF options and could be shared on social networks.[10]
